Morphological Characterization of Flower, Fruit and Seed of Jara Lemon (citrus Medica) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sylhet region is a rich centre for different citrus germplasm. In this point of view three jara lemon germplasm were characterized. Irrespective of cultivars jara lemon produced flower round the year although, there was little or no fruit set in winter. All the cultivars produce hermaphrodite and male flowers having white colour, inflorescence position was both terminal and axillary generally 5-9 number of flower bud was found per inflorescence. The fruit weight, length and diameter of Guti Jara were 1012 g, 11.5 cm and 23.0 cm, respectively, in Gol Jara were 247.5 g, 7.6 cm and 8.1cm, respectively and in Pani Jara were 247.5 g, 8.7 cm and 15.0 cm respectively. The rind thickness of Guti Jara and Pani Jara was thick but in Gol Jara was medium. Fruit surface of Guti Jara was rough while the Gol Jara and Pani Jara was smooth. Variation was also found in case of pulp and seed characteristics. Titratable acids and TSS of Guti Jara, were 8.73 and 7.1%, Gol Jara contained 12.23 and 7.0%, while Pani Jara contained 10.88 and 6.2%, respectively. Number of seeds per fruit and 100 seed weight of studied jaga germplasm ranged from 20-50 and 15-20 g, respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate and documented the flower, fruit and seed jara lemon germplasm for future utilization
To characterized superior jara lemon germplam in respect to different flower, fruit and seed characteristics

Methodology:

In-situ morphological characterization through flower, fruit and seed of three jara lemon germplasm were conducted at the Citrus Research Station, BARI, Jaintapur, Sylhet and farmers’ orchard of Fatehpur, Haripur, Sylhet during 2012-13. Three jara lemon germplasm viz. Guti Jara, Gol Jara and Pani Jara were included in this study and characterized. Characterization was done following the descriptor published by IPGRI. According to IPGRI descriptor different calyx, pedicel, petals, sepals, anther, stamen, flower, pollen, stigma, fruit, rind, pulpepicarp, mesocarp, endocarp, oil gland, segment, fruit axis, pulp, vesicle and seed characters were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

In respect of calyx, pedicel, petals, sepals, anther, stamen, flower, pollen, stigma, fruit, rind, pulpepicarp, mesocarp, endocarp, oil gland, segment, fruit axis, pulp, vesicle and seed characters studied jara lemon showed a wide variations. Therefore, it can be concluded that those germplasm are distinct GI crop of Bangladesh.
