An experiment was conducted in the net house of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from November 2011 to April 2012 to investigate the ameliorative effect of application of gypsum and sloping bed transplanting on the yield of Bora rice (cv. BRRI dhan47) under salinity stress. The experiment comprised of (a) two methods of transplanting vis. traditional and sloping bed, (b) two levels of-gypsum application viz. control and 1 g kg-1 soil applied after imposing salinity stress and (c) five levels of salinity stress viz. 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 mM NaCI. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The combination of gypsum application and sloping bed transplanting showed significant ameliorative effect on grain and straw yields of Bora rice (cv. BRRI dhan47) under various levels of salinity. The highest grain yield (5.49 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.36 t ha-1) were obtained from the interaction of sloping bed transplanting and application of gypsum under no salinity level. On the other hand, no grain yield and the lowest straw yield (1.84 t ha-1) were found in the interaction of traditional transplanting with no gypsum application under 100 mM salinity level. With the increase in salinity stress both grain and straw yields declined significantly. However, the yield reduction could remarkably be minimized at each salinity level using sloping bed transplanting and gypsum application compared to that of no gypsum application under traditional transplanting. The results of the study suggest that salinity stress in Boro rice could be ameliorated significantly by practicing sloping bed transplanting method in combination with gypsum application.

To determine the combined ameliorative effect of sloping bed transplanting method and gypsum application on the performance of Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan47) under salinity stress.

The experiment was conducted in the net house of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in Chari (earthen bowl) having 25cm diameter during Boro season from November 2011 to May 2012. The experiment comprised of (a) two methods of transplanting viz. traditional and sloping bed (b) two levels of gypsum application viz. control and 1 g kg-l soil applied after imposition of salinity stress and (c) five levels of salinity viz. 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 mM NaCl. The soil was collected from Agronomy Field Laboratory. After collecting the soil, it was sun dried and ground well. Then the soil debris was removed and the soil was put into chari after mixing with basal dose of fertilizer. Each chari was filled up with 22 kg soil and leveled well. Forty-five-day old seedlings were transplanted at the rate of one seedling hill-l and five hills cheril, For treatment of traditional transplanting (T), rice seedlings were transplanted in the flat top of soil. In case of sloping bed transplanting (S), seedlings were transplanted around the furrow of the sloping bed. Gap filling was done on 15 days after transplanting with the seedlings taken from the original source. Urea (10.646 g charil) was applied in three equal splits in each chari on 10, 30 and 50 days after transplanting (DAT) of rice. Commercial salt (NaCl) was used for developing salinity level of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mM NaCl Salinity stress was imposed when the crop was at maximum tillering stage. Immediately after the imposition of salinity stress, gypsum was added as per treatment specification. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Irrigation was given every day to maintain water level at about 2 cm height until the crop entered at ripening stage. The crop was harvested at full maturity on 30 April 2010. Data were collected on yield and yield parameters. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that yield performance of Boro rice cv. BRRI dhan47 gradually decreased with the increase in salinity level. Application of gypsum and sloping bed transplanting method increased the yield of BRRI dhan47 when no salinity was imposed. There was no reduction in the crop yield up to 25 mM NaCl salinity when gypsum was applied under sloping bed transplantation. Furthermore, the detrimental effect of salinity up to 100 mM NaCI on the crop could successfully be ameliorated to a significant extent by adopting the planting method and gypsum application.
