A Check-list of the Coastal Fishes of the Bay of Bengal from the Gulf of Manaar to the Gulf of Martaban. Ii. Elasmobranchii (rajiformes, Torpediniformes) and Holocephali

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This is the second paper in the series of the check-list of the coastal fishes of the Bay of Bengal. It deals with the group Elasmobranchii (Batoidei) and Holocephali. From the information collected, a comprehensive systematic account of 43 species belonging to 23 genera and 11 families occurring in the region of the Bay of Bengal from the Gulf of Martaban to the Gulf of Martaban became available. Distribution data and remarks on each of the species have also been included. The species occurring in the Coast of Bangladesh have been marked with an asterisk (*).

Objectives:

TO DERTERMINE A CHECK-LIST OF THE COASTAL FISHES OF THE BAY OF BENGAL FROM THE GULF OF MANAAR TO THE GULFOF MARTABAN. II. ELASMOBRANCHII (RAJIFORMES,TORPEDINIFORMES) AND HOLOCEPHALI

Methodology:

The present checklist purports to include all the species of the super order Bitoidei and of the subclass Holocephali known lo inhabit the region covered in the present survey. In the systematic account thus prepared a total of 43 species belonging to 23 genera and 11 families have been listed. The order Rejiformes is represented by 34 species belonging to 15 genera and 8 families. Torpediniformes by 6 species belonging to 5 genera and a single family while the subclass Holocephali is represented by 3 species that belong to 3 different genera and 2 families. The species occurring in the coast of 'Bangladesh' have been marked with an asterisk (*). Two maps-one demarcating the boundaries of Bangladesh, India, Burma and Ceylon and the other showing the coastal plain of Bangladesh- have been provided earlier (Sarker, 1977).
