Amino Acid Supplementation to Vegetable Protein Diet and Economic Use of Slaughter House Wastes, Fish By-products in the Poultry Ration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with one hundred and ten randomly selected seven month old PIA-SHAVER (Star-cross) pullets to study whether or not vegetable protein diets can be supplemented with amino acid like lysine and methionine as a substitute of animal protein. The group of birds which received basal diet with vegetable protein and added lysine, had the highest average body weight (1.79 Kg); and egg production was negatively correlated. In this experiment lysine was found to be growth promoting amino acid. The average hen-day egg production for the group of hens which received basal diet with offal and blood meal was highest (26.01%) than the other treatment groups. Results obtained in this experiment suggest that the group of birds which received the ration supplemented with animal protein sources showed better performance in term of body weight gain, egg production and feed efficiency than the other groups.

Objectives:

To formulate a ration for poultry which will give maximum return with minimum cost utilizing the locally available cheaper feed-stuffs and wastes supplemented with limiting amino acids.

Methodology:

One hundred and ten randomly selected seven-month old PIA-SHA VER (Star-cross) pullets reared in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm during the year 1971 were used to carry out this experiment. The bird were leg banded for identification and were divided equally at random into 5 treatment groups with 22 pullets in each. Each treatment group was housed into two replicates of 11 birds each. The pullets were placed in separate pens of equal size in the laying house, Composition of experimental rations used for different treatment. All the diets were iso-nitro-genous and iso-caloric having 16.22 % protein and 1841 calories (M. E.) per kg of mixed feed. Feed and water were available to the birds adlibitum. Green vegetables were supplied to all birds during the experimental period. The pullets were vaccinated against New Castle disease before the pullets were placed in the experimental pens. The experiment was continued for 4 periods of 30 day each. The birds were weighed individually at the beginning of the experiment and the average body weight of each of the treatment group was equalized. Thereafter, all surviving birds were weighed at the end of each 30 day period. A record of the amount of feed consumed by each replicate was obtained at the completion of each 30 day period.

Achievement/Findings:

Results obtained in this experiment suggest that the group of birds which received the ration supplemented with animal protein sources showed better performance in term of body weight gain, egg production and feed efficiency than the other groups. The mortality of birds in Treatment No.1 and 5 were considerably lower than those of other groups. No Significant differences were observed when all treatments were included in the Chi-square analysis.
