On-farm Evaluation of Production Potential and Economic Returns of Potato-rice Based Improved Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the yield and economic consequences of two cropping patterns viz. IP: improved pattern (Potato - T. Aus - T. Aman) and FP: farmer's pattern (Fallow-T. Aus -T. Aman) through incorporation of modern high yielding varieties and improved management practices for crop production. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications in farmer's condition in Sylhet, during three consecutive years 2009-10, 2010-11 and 20112. Three years mean data showed that the improved management practices for the pattern provided higher yield in T. Aus and T. Aman rice, respectively. The gross return (Tk. 3,76,910 ha^-l) and gross margin (Tk. 1,60,431 ha^-1) of improved pattern were higher compared to that of farmer's pattern with only 136% extra cost. The higher benefit cost ratio (1. 74), rice equivalent yield (20.94), production efficiency (79.59), land-use efficiency (91.23%) and sustainable yield index (0.43) indicated the superiority of the improved pattern over the farmer's practices.

Objectives:

To find out the agro-economic feasibility of an improved package of technologies over the existing farmer's practices in Sylhet area.

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out at farmers filed in Sylhet, belongs to the Surma Kushiara Floodplain of Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ-20) of Bangladesh, during three consecutive years 2009-10, 2010-11 and 20112. This study was conducted to determine the economic consequences of two cropping patterns viz. IP: improved pattern (Potato - T. Aus - T. Aman) and FP: farmer's pattern (Fallow - T. Aus - T. Aman) through incorporation of modern high yielding varieties and improved management practices for crop production. Initial soil nutrient status (2009- 12), annual profile of monthly total rainfall in Bangladesh (1961-2010) and annual monthly total rainfall in Sylhet (2007-2012) were recorded, respectively. Bangladesh is tropical monsoon climate with unimodal rainfall pattern throughout the year. The highest amount of country average monthly rainfall occurs in July followed by June and August, and lowest amount of rainfall occurs in January followed by December and February. Rainfall increases gradually from the month of January to July and then decreases . In Sylhet, the highest amount of average monthly rainfall occurs in June followed by August, July and May, whereas lowest amount of rainfall occurs in January followed by December and February. Rainfall increases gradually from the month of January to June and then decreases. Annual monthly total rainfall 3720 mm was during the period 2007-2012. Average maximum and minimum temperature was 31.32 and was 14.710C, respectively . The soil was clay loam with low organic matter content (1.40%) and soil pH was ranged 5.3-6.0 acidic in nature. The status of N, P, K, S, Band Zn was very low, low, low, very low and medium, respectively . Experimental design was a randomized complete block with six dispersed replications. Two plots of 500 m² were selected for each replication. One plot was under the improved pattern and the other farmer's pattern. In the improved pattern, the potato (var. Diamont) was introduced against fallow period. The rice variety BRRI dhan48 and BRRI dhan49 were used in the improved pattern instead of BR-26 and BR-11 for T. Aus and T. Aman rice, respectively. All field operation and management practices of both farmer's and improved pattern were closely monitored and the data were recorded for agro- economic performance. The yield differences between the practices were statistically analyzed by' t -test. Agronomic performance viz. land use efficiency, production efficiency, rice equivalent yield and sustainable yield index of cropping patterns were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Three years result showed that higher rice-equivalent yield, sustainable yield index, net monetary return and BCR was obtained from improved pattern (Potato - T. Aus -T. Aman rice) with modem variety BRRI dhan48 and BRRI dhan49 in T. Aus and T. Aman rice with improved technologies could be suggested for medium high land of the Surma Kushiara Floodplain in Agro- Ecological Zone (AEZ-20) of Bangladesh.
