Growth Rates and Rank Relation Ships with Days of Maturity and Yield in Brassica Populations

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In an experiment conducted with 26 varieties of three Brassica species v 2l ; B. campestris (9 nos.) B juncea (11 nos.) and B. napus ( 6 nos ) In one season. tile rates of increase in plant height was measured by using regression co-efficients. The results showed that the rates of increase was highest in case of B juncea varieties ( b=2.30) while, it was 2nd highest in B canpestrtis (b= 2.23 ). The lowest rate was found in B. napus (b= 1.09). All the 26 materials were separately studied for finding out this rates of increase where the lines M-12S and M-21 showed maximum and 2nd maximum values of "b" which were 3.38 and 3 3S respectively. Both these lines belong to B juncea. In B. campest ris it was Sampad ( M-12). a newly released variety which showed highest rate of increase (b=2.88). In case of B. napus, M.6l gave the highest rate of increase in plant height.

Objectives:

To find out the rank order relationships with days to maturity and yield / plant based on desirable selection criteria for plant height and days to maturity.

Methodology:

In this study there were 26 breeding lines including recommended varieties of B. campestris L. ( 9 nos. ) B. juncea (L.) Czern & Coss (11 nos.) and B. napus L. (6 nos.). These were grown in the field of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding. Bangladesh Agricultural University during the growing season covering 1979-80. Randomized block design was used with 3 replications. The standard production conditions were used with plant spacing of 30 and lS cm. between rows and between plants in a row. Urea, Triple super phosphate and Muriate of potash for supplying N. P and K were applied at the rates of 138, 138 and 58 kg/ha, Ten plants were selected in the field from each plot and the sampled plants were tagged and studied for estimation of plant height at an interval of 15 days from sowing to complete flowering at the terminal raceme. The rates of increase in plant height were determined by using standard formula for linear regression coefficients. The per day increase in plant height was determined after dividing the total height by total days to maturity. The rank order relationships were estimated as per Welkowitz's et. al, (1976) formula for -'rs', This was based on grade points for days to maturity and plant height and yield given in order of high to low values in each cases.

Achievement/Findings:

An analysis of rank order relationships in each species was done particularly to find out whether there exists any strong relationships when genotypes are ranked in order of plant height and days to maturity and highest seed yield plant. The Spearman', rank order relationships (Welkowitz. et. al., 1976) clearly showed that the 'rs' values for B. juncea and B. campestris for maturity and plant height rankings were significant indicating that the longer the duration higher the plant height. Again when the same analysis was made with yield per plant. the same two species showed significant values. These therefore, clearly indicated that yield situation depend much on plant height and day. to maturity.
