A Survey on the Helminth Parasites of Lata Fish (channidae) in and Around the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was undertaken to record the prevalence and incidence of helminth parasites affecting the Lata fish ( Channa punctatus ). Fishes were caught with the help of cast net, seine net and gill net and brought alive to the laboratory. Then they were examined for helminth parasites with the help of a hand lens and dissecting microscope. A total of 500 adult Lata fish from ponds in and around the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus Mymensingh were examined for helminth parasites during the period from March, 1979 to February, 1980. 53. 8% of fishes were infected with various helminth parasites. Of the total fishes examined 14% were found to be infected with Euclinostomum multicaecum, 7% by Philopi nna sp, 14% by Pallisenus ophiocephali, 7.2% by Ascaridia sp., 3.8% by Ascaris sp, and 7.8 % by Procamallanus sp, All the above species of helminths except Pollisentis ophiocephali and Procamallanus sp, wore recorded for the first time in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

This study was undertaken to record the prevalence and incidence of helminth parasites affecting the Lata fish ( Channa punctatus ).

Methodology:

Lata ( Channa punctatus) were collected from five different ponds of Bangladesh Agricultural University Fish Farm. Collections were made with the help of seine net, cast net, gill net and dip net. Fishes were brought alive to the laboratory and placed in a tray and their outer surface like skin, scales, fins and tail were examined with the help of a hand lens and dissecting microscope for parasites. Then the host fishes were cut .open by an incision along the mid- ventral line and the body cavity, peritonial cavity, pericardial region, stomach surface and intestinal surface were examined for parasites. After skinning the fish the muscles were cut opened longitudinally and examined for parasites. The digestive tract. liver, kidney and air bladder of fishes were cut opened and examined for parasites. Any helminth parasites thus found were kept in physiological saline for proper relaxation.

Achievement/Findings:

The 7.8% of fishes were infected with this parasite. It was observed from that only one parasite was recovered from 1.4%, two from 1.6 %. three from 0.8 %. four from 1.0%. five from 0.6% six from 1.2%. seven from 0.8%, eight from 0.2% and nine from 0.2% of fishes. The incidence of this parasite was low. Prevalence of Procamallanus sp, was recorded . So the data recorded in this study Could not be compared with other findings
