Split Application of Fertilizer on Plant Growth and Yield of Grafted Jackfruit Plant

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2013-14 to study the effects of split application of fertilizer on grafted jackfruit plant. Plant height was significantly influenced by the treatments. The highest plant height T₄ (3.90 m) was observed in followed by T₃(3.36 m) and T₂(3.30 m). The lowest plant height (2.90 m) was found in T₁. Base girth was also affected significantly by the treatments, while the effect of treatment on trunk height was insignificant. The highest base girth (47.0 cm) was recorded in T₄and the lowest (33.0 cm) in T₅. The treatment T₃ failed to exhibited significant difference with T₂. The number of male inflorescence varied from 25.3 (T₄) to 41.0 (T₃) per plant in different treatments. All the inflorescences did not open at a time. The number of fruit set differed significantly with the treatments. The highest number of fruit set (9.3) was obtained from T₃ followed by T₂ (4.3). The lowest number of fruit set/plant (2.3) was obtained from T₅.

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate fertilizer dose and time of application for young grafted jackfruit plants.

To study the effect of fertilizer application on growth, gestation period and yield of jackfruit

To developed proper fertilizer application package as well as time of application for jackfruit.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the year 2013-14 to find out the appropriate fertilizer dose and time of application for young grafted jackfruit plants. There were 5 fertilizer treatments, viz.-

T₁: N-90 g and K-180 g applied 2 times at May and September;

T₂: N-90 g and K-180 g applied 4 times at May, August, November and February;

T₃: N-90 g and K-180 g applied 6 times at May, July, September, November, January and March;

T₄: N-108 g, P-108 g and K-108 g at May, July, September, November, January and March; and

T₅: Only organic matter at May and September at 20 kg per plant.

The experiment was laid out in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The treatments T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄ were also added 20 kg cow dung at May and September. The amount of fertilizer was increased according to the age of the plant. Grafted plants of jackfruit germplasm AH Joy-101 were planted in the month of July, 2008. Pruning, training, weeding and irrigation were done as and when necessary. Fruits were harvested in the month of June. Data on plant growth parameters and fruits/plant, fruit weight and fruit characteristics were collected on 20 March, 2014 and were analyzed statistically. Mean separation were done on the basis of Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 0.05 and 0.01% level.

Achievement/Findings:

Split application of N and K fertilizers accelerated the plant growth and fruiting of grafted jackfruit plants and after 3 years fruit set was occurred. In the 5^th year, number of fruiting trees and number of fruit per plant increased. So up to 5 years, the treatment T₃ with N (90 g) and K (180 g) applied 6 times at May, July, September, November, January and March was found effective for proper growth, reduce the gestation period and enhance the yield of jackfruit.
