Soil Moisture Monitoring in T. Aman Rice Harvested Fallow Land Under Surma Kushiara Flood Plain of Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A trial was conducted to estimate the residual soil moisture of T. Aman rice fields after harvesting of the crop. in Surma Kushiara Flood Plain of Sylhet, using gravimetric method. Such information could be useful to determine the possibilities of cultivating additional short duration crops after the harvesting of the main rice crop. The experiment was conducted at ML T site. Moulavibazar during November to May in three consecutive years 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. The treatment variables were four soil moisture depths (D₁= 0-5 cm, D₂= 5-10 cm, D₃= 10-15 cm and D₄= 15-20 cm) and three different positions (l=Inner position, M=Midway and De-Drip-iine) from centre to periphery of the study area before and after harvest of T. Aman rice. The measured soil moisture values were correlated with the precipitation. Three years monthly average moisture percent was little higher in inner position (0 than that of the midway (M) and drip line (D) of the study area except November. The decreasing trend of soil moisture started from December prevails up to March in each year and it again started increasing. From the finding it may be concluded that per cent soil moisture goes down shortly after harvest of T. Aman rice. It is one of the reasons behind the land remains fallow in Sylhet.

Objectives:

To estimate the residual soil moisture of T. Aman rice fields after harvesting of the crop.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at ML T site, Moulavibazar during November to May in three consecutive years 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. The soil samples were collected with a 15 days interval at different soil layers and positions of experimental site before and after harvested of Aman rice in fallow land. The site has been selected based on the logistic lab facilities and consultation with soil scientist. Before collecting the soil samples, the experimental site has been divided into three different positions (I=Inner position, M=Midway and D=Drip-line) on the east- west and north-south directions from centre to periphery of the study area and at four different level D₁=0-5 cm, D₂=5-10 cm, D₃=10-15 cm and D₄=15-20 cm) of depths in each positions as to minimize the experimental errors and proper representation of information. The soil samples were collected with a screw augur from the fallow land and put in aluminum cups and then quickly transferred to the soil science laboratory, Regional Research Station, Akbarpur, Moulvibazar. A thermo statistically controlled oven preferably of the forced drought type, capable of maintaining a temperature between 105⁰C and 110⁰C was used in this experiment. At least 20 samples were collected from each spots and averages of those were used. After taking fresh weight, samples were kept in to the oven for drying. The soil moisture content was measured by following gravimetric method (Black, 1965). Further the analyzed data was compiled as to present in tabular form. The daily precipitation and temperature data of the study area during the 2010 to 2013 period were acquired from the Meteorological Administration, Sreemangal, Moulvibazar. The measured soil moisture values were then correlated with the precipitation.
