Effect of Fertilizer and Irrigation on Fruit Retention in Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of fertilizer and irrigation on the yield and quality of mango was studied at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from August 2013 to July 2014. Three different levels of and control along with two levels of irrigation were included in the study as treatments. The treatments varied widely with respect to the number of fruit set and onward fruit retention/panicle. Number of fruit set per panicle (14.57) as well as finally the highest fruit retention/panicle (1.18) was obtained from the plants treated with 250% fertilizer dose followed by 175% fertilizer dose (1.05). Control plants had minimum number of fruits/panicle (0.50) at harvest. There were significant variations due to irrigation in terms of fruit retention harvest. Two irrigation one at flowering stage and another one at pea stage of fruit showed higher fruit retention/panicle. After that plants irrigated at an interval of 10 days up to maturity of fruit exhibited superiority over the treatment two irrigation; one at flowering stage and another one at pea stage of fruit showed higher fruit retention/panicle with respect to fruit retention/panicle and at harvest, it was 1.07.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of fertilizer and irrigation on fruit retention of mango.

To find out the appropriate fertilizer dose and level of irrigation for mango

To developed proper fertilizer application package as well as level of irrigation for higher yield of mango.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during September 2013 July 2014. BARI Mango-4 was used in the study as variety. The experiment was laid out in a randomized Complete Block Design (Factorial) with 3 replications.

Three doses of fertilizers i.e. Factor A

F₁ = 100 % (N: 230.41 g, P: 50.00 g K: 100 g, S: 35.97 g, Zinc: 3.60, Boron: 3.40),

F₂ = 175 % of F₁_,

F₃ = 250 % of F₁ and

F₄ = control (no fertilizer)

Two types of irrigation i.e. Factor B

I₁ = two irrigation one at full bloom and another one at pea stage of fruit and

I₂ = irrigation at an interval of 10 days starting from full bloom and continued up to maturity included in the study.

Irrigation were applied considering the effective soil depth of 1.20 m and a diameter of 1.00 m. Bulk density and field capacity was measured. Adequate care and management of the plants in the experiment were taken as per need. The data on the number of fruit set/panicle, fruit retention/panicle at an interval of 7 days up to harvest, number of fruit/panicle at harvest were recorded. The collected data were tabulated and statistically analyzed with appropriate design of experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) adopting a statistical programme MSTAC-C. The treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5 % level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum number of fruits set per plant as well as maximum fruit retention per plant at harvest were manifested from the plants treated with 250 % of the fertilizer dose along with irrigation as compared to minimum number of fruit set per plant and and the lowest fruit retention in the treatment combination of no fertilizer and two irrigation one at flowering stage and another one at pea stage of fruit.
