An experiment was conducted at the research farm of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during rabi season of 2007-2008 to study seed yield and profitability as affected by sowing dates and short duration rapeseed varieties. Sowing dates viz., 01 November, 10 November, 20 November, 30 November and 10 December and three rapeseed varieties viz., BARI Sarisha-9, BARI Sarisha-14 and BARI Sarisha-15 were used as treatment variables. Sowing dates showed significant influence on number of siliqua plant-1 , number of seed siliqua-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, and biological yield and harvest index. Rapeseed varieties viz., BARI Sarisha-9, BARI Sarisha-14 and BARI Sarisha-15 also showed significant variation except harvest index. Results showed that BARI Sarisha-15 at 01 November sowing performed best with respect to seed yield (1541kg ha-1), gross return (BDT 55,134 ha-1), gross margin (BDT 26,591 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (1.93), and this variety might profitably be grown up to 20 November with seed yield 1074 kg ha-1, gross return BDT 38,461 ha-1 , gross margin BDT 12,493 ha-1and benefit cost ratio 1.48.

To evaluate the seed yield and profitability of rapeseed varieties at different sowing dates.

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Crop Botany Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during rabi season of 2007- 2008 to study the effect of sowing dates on seed yield and profitability of short duration rapeseed varieties. Geographically, the experimental site is located at 24.090N latitude and 90.260E longitude and 8.4 m above the mean sea level. The experimental area belongs to the 'Shallow Red-Brown Terrace Soil of Salna series under Madhupur Tract (AEZ 28) (Brammer, 1971).The experiment was laid out in a split plot design (SPD) with three replications. Five sowing dates viz., 01 November (SI), 10 November (S2), 20 November (S3), 30 November (S4) and 10 December (S5) were assigned in main plot and three rapeseed varieties viz. BARI Sarisha-9 (VI), BARI Sarisha-14 (V2) and BARI Sarisha-15 (V3) were placed in sub-plot. Short duration (around 80 days) rapeseed varieties were selected from previous experiment. Well decomposed cow dung @ 5 t ha-1 was applied during land preparation. N, P, K, S, Zn and B at the rate of 110, 30, 40, 25, 3 and 1 kg ha-l were added as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Half of urea and entire amount of triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP), gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid were applied at the time of final land preparation. Remaining urea was top dressed at 25 days after emergence. Unit plot size was 3 m x 2.7 m. A row to row distance was maintained 30 cm whereas plant to plant distance was 5 cm within the row maintaining a plant density around 60 plants m-2.  Thinning was done 2 times at 10 and 15 days after emergence. Weeding was done 2 times at 15 and 25 days after emergence and irrigation was applied 3 times at 16, 26 and 38 days after emergence. Tufgor 40 EC @ 0.2% was applied against saw fly and aphids. Rovral was applied against alternaria leaf blight. The crop was harvested at 75% siliqua maturity of the main raceme. Seeds were dried, cleaned and adjusted at 9% moisture and yield was expressed as kg ha-1. Biological yield is the sum of seed yield and stover yield and expressed in kg ha-l. Recorded data were analyzed statistically with the help of MSTATC program. Treatment means were compared following Least Significant Difference (LSD). Price of inputs and outputs were calculated considering existing local price.
