Infestation of Bruchid Beetle (callosobruchus Chinensis L. Bruchidae: Coleoptera) on Different Pulse Seed Treated with Neem (azadirachta Indica A. Juss) and Til (sesanum Indicum L.) Oils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

After five months of storage, the infestation by Callosobruchus chinensis L. under free choice test in neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss ) and til ( Sesanum indicum L.) oil treated seeds of khesari ( Lathyrus sativus L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. ) @ 10 m l oil/kg of seeds was 9.30%, and 36.67%; 22.50% and 31.53% and, 27.03% and 36.37% respectively, while it was 69.13% 64.97% and 67.13% respectively in control. Neem oil was found to be superior to til oil for its surface protectant activity. The weight loss in neem and til oil treated seeds of khesari, lentil and chick- pea due to C. chinensis was 1.63% and 6.80%; 11.92% and 16.53% and, 1.17% and 1.61% respectively, while it was 12.73, 34.36 and 2.85% in control. No adverse effect on the germination of the oil treated seeds was observed.

Objectives:

To test the efficacy of two locally available and cheaper oils viz., neem and til oils for their surface protectant activity on three popular pulses, namely, chickpea, lentil and khesari under free choice test against the bruchid and the weight losses due to the pest attack was assessed.

Methodology:

Well-dried, healthy seeds of khesari lentil and chickpea were kept for eight days in a deep freeze in sealed polythene bags to avoid internal infestation. The moisture contents of the aforesaid pulses, viz., khesari, lentil and chickpea were 12.1, 12.5 and 12.3% respectively. One hundred and fifty grams seeds of each of pulses were kept separately in 250 g capacity plastic pots. Three treatments including the untreated control for each pulse with three replications were taken. 1.5 ml oil was mixed by gently shaking the seeds in the respective pots. All the pots were randomly placed in a circle equidistant from each other at a radius of 45 cm under ambient conditions in the laboratory. At the centre of the circle a culture of the insect was maintained to provide a constant source of infestation to the seeds. The tops of the pots were kept open. After five months of storage, all the seeds of each pot were well mixed and 1,000 seeds were randomly counted. Seed damage was determined by counting the number of infested (seeds with feeding boles) and noninfested seeds. Where, U is the wt. of undamaged grains; Nu is the number of undamaged grains; D is the wt. of damaged grains; Nd is the number of damaged grains. The viability of treated and untreated fresh seeds was determined by germinating 100 randomly selected seeds from each jar in large petridishes using moist cotton as a substrate.
