Evaluation of Husbandry Methods and Drugs for the Control of Ascariasis in Chicken

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Amongst the husbandry methods evaluated, cage rearing of chickens had advantage over all other methods in reducing ascarid infection. Of the four drugs evaluated, the drug Panacur was highly effective against both larvae and adults of the ascarids and Avipar, Uvilon and Coopane were found effective only against adult worms. All the drugs administered at the recommended dose by the manufacturers were found no toxic and had no adverse effect on egg production and growth of the chickens. In our situation, considering the market price of the drugs, Avipar and Uvilon are cheaper than Coopane and Panacur.

Objectives:

To evaluate various husbandry methods and safe and economic drug(s) for the control of ascariasis in chicken.

Methodology:

The various husbandry methods evaluated in reducing ascarids infection in chickens were (a) chickens reared in deep litter houses keeping feed troughs and waterers on the floor (traditional method) (b) chickens reared in deep litter houses keeping feed troughs and waterier in hanging condition a little above the floor (c) chickens reared in cages/batteries (d) chickens reared in deep litter houses in traditional method but removing faeces and damp litters in every 5-7 days interval and (e) chickens reared in deep litter houses in traditional method, without removing faeces and damp litters for a period of 6 months. To asses the results of the above mentioned parameters, weekly collected pooled monthly faecal samples preserved in 10% formalin over the period of six months were examined for ascarids infection. Initially faecal samples of everyone month collections were examined directly under microscope (x100) for the presence of ascarids eggs, and further to determine the load of ascarids infection, eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces were counted by using the McMaster egg counting chamber following the technique of Train and Hansen.
