Characteristics of Three Bangladesh Soil Profiles

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three characteristics soil profiles - two rice and one forest profiles from the Joydebpur area of the Dhaka District- were investigated. The results show that all profiles under study had low content of coarser fractions irrespective of depth. The pH. CEC and pedogenic oxides were variable among profiles and depths. The qualitative estimate of the clay fractions showed the dominance of smectite followed by illite irrespective of depth. However, smsctite and soil chlorite were stratified in all horizons.

Objectives:

To make a comparative chemical and mineralogical investigation of two rice and one forest profiles of Madbupur clay.

Methodology:

The soil samples were collected from two rice and one forest profiles from the in 1979, The morphological characteristics of soil profiles have been described below : All the three soils belong to the Chhiata series, The soils were developed over shallowly weathered Madhupur clay. Two rice profiles of Salna and BARI farm are shallowly flooded by rain water for about 4.5 months. The Bhawal forest profile is lying above the flood level.

Achievement/Findings:

The research data show that all profiles under study bad low content of coarser fractions irrespective of depths. The soil, developed over Madhupur clay have in general bulk amount of clay and silt. A closer look into the data shows that the top surface horizon of rice profiles had less clay than the forest profile. The similar trend was also obtained in the finer silt fraction.
