Breeding for Variety Development of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the year 1988-89,16 experiments of tomato were conducted of which 14 were conducted of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm and the rest 2 experiments were conducted through MCC at Noakhali, one on zonal trial and one on Multi location Trial. Among the 14 experiment conducted at BAU farm (a) One on germ plasm, (b) One on Fl hybrids (c) three on segregating materials (d) three on performance study (e) three on yield trial (f) one on replicated trial (g) one on observation trial and (h) one on zonal trial. In the segregating populations single plant selection (SPS) was practiced on the basis of yield and other characters as compared with their parents as well as standard varieties. In F₂, F₄ and F₅ generation 3. 5 and 2 SPS respectively were selected which produced more than 3 kg fruit yield/plant. Six promising lines BAU/TM 0041, C0 46, 0066, 0093 and 0101 were selected which produced fruit yield of more than 75 tons/ha. The lines BAU/TM 0158. 0159.0163. 0170 and 0171 were also selected having more than 81 tons/ha fruit yield. These will be used in the next year yield trials. From the performance study of F7 lines, 9 lines found to be superior to all the standard varieties. Besides these 5 AVRDC lines were also selected for using in the crossing program.

Objectives:

To determine the breeding for variety development of tomato.

Methodology:

In the year 1988-89 fourteen experiments were conducted which included (a) one on germ plasm; (b) one on F_lhybrids: (c) three on segregating materials; (d) three on performance study; (e) three on yield trials; (f) one on replication trial; (g) one on observation trial; and (h) one on zonal trial. The experiments on germ plasm, advanced generation lines, yield trials performance studv, zonal trials and observation trials were conducted in a Randomized Block Design with three replications, while the materials of the segregation generations were grown without replications. For all the experiments, line to line and plant spacing was 60 and 50 cm respectively. and 10 tons cow dung, 350 kg oil cake. 200 kg Urea were used. The plants genotypes/ lines showing better performance in respect of yield and other characters as compared with parents/standard varieties were selected for further study in the next growing season. Data on individual plants/randomly selected plants were recorded for each genotype in each replication. Records on flowering date plant height, number of fruits /plant, individual fruit weight fruit yield/plant and fruit yield/unit area were recorded.
