Effect of Irrigation on the Flower and Fruit Drop in Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to find out the effect of irrigation on fruit retention as well as yield and quality of mango at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during September 2013 to August 2014. There were four irrigation treatments i.e. 2, 4 and 6 split application iirrigation each at an interval of 10 days and control (no irrigation). The longest panicle was recorded in the treatment 4 irrigation at an interval of 10 days (28.50 cm) which was statistically at par to that of 6 irrigation at an interval of 10 days (26.13 cm). Control exhibited the shortest panicle (22.07 cm). Fruit retention per panicle at all dates exhibited significant influence due to irrigation. From 30.03.14 to harvest of fruit, always 6 irrigation at an interval of 10 days gained higher fruit retention per panicle which was 1.37 at harvest. The lowest fruit retention per panicle was manifested in un-irrigated control (0.53) at harvest. Maximum TSS (21.80 %) was recorded in the treatment 6 irrigation at an interval of 10 days compared to minimum in control (17.2 %).

Objectives:

To investigating the effect of irrigation on the fruit retention, increased yield and quality of mango.

To determine optimum level of irrigation for mango production.

To select the optimum time and split of irrigation for proper yield and higher fruit retention and fruit quality in mango

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during September 2013 July 2014. BARI Mango-3 was used as variety in the experiment. The single factor experiment was set in a randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications.

There were four treatments i.e.

I₁₌Two irrigation at an interval of 10 days starting from full bloom

I₂₌Four irrigation at an interval of 10 days starting from full bloom,

I₃₌Six irrigation at an interval of 10 days starting from full bloom and

I₀: control (no irrigation).

Irrigations were applied at field capacity. Manures and fertilizers @ Cowdung: 25 kg; N: 230.41 g, P: 50.00 g, K: 100.00 g, S: 35.97 g, Zn: 3.60 g, B: 3.40 g were applied. Adequate care and management of the plants in the experiment were taken as per need. Two sprays; First spray with Tilt @ 0.5 ml/L and Ripcord @ 1 ml/L was applied before flower opening and after panicle emergence and the second spray was done at the pea stage of fruits. The data on the following parameters plant height, base girth, canopy spread, length of terminal shoot at flowering, number of leaves per terminal shoot at flowering, length of panicle, number of secondary branches per panicle, date of full bloom, fruit retention at an interval of 7 days, date of harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit characters, TSS and yield were recorded. The collected data were tabulated and statistically analyzed with appropriate design of experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) adopting a statistical programme MSTAC-C. The treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5 % level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Six irrigations at an interval of 10 days exhibited higher fruit retention per panicle, number of fruits as well as yield per plant over control. The experiment will be continued to confirming the result.
