Efficacy of Some Chemicals in Controlling Seed-brone Gerlachia Oryzae in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among the eight fungicides and their combinations tested as seed dressing, Bavistin, Benlate, Brassicol, Topsin-M, Parasan-one and most of the combinations completely eliminated the seed-borne Gerlachia oryzae in rice. Evaluation of nine fungicides following poison food technique revealed Bavistin, Benlate and Topsin-M to be highly toxic to this fungus at concentration of 10 ppm or higher.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable chemical to control seed-borne G. oryzae,

Methodology:

A leaf scald susceptible variety Intan, with high natural seed infection was used for this test. Chemicals tested were, Bavistin (carbendazim), Benlate (benomyl), Blitox (copper oxychloride), Brassicol (quintozene), Dithane M-45 (mancozeb), Parasan-one (phenyl mercury acetate) Topsin- M (thiophanate methyl) and Vitavax (carboxin) and all possible combinations of any two of them at 1: 1 (W /W) proportion. Individual chemical or combination was mixed to the seeds thoroughly using a mechanical shaker. Chemicals were used at 0.3% of the seed weight. After 48 h of treatment 200 seeds from each treatment as well as from control were plated on blotter. Observation on the incidence G. oryzae was made after 14 days of incubation at 25± ^ºC under 12 h cycle of Near Ultra Violet (NUV) light and darkness. In another experiment in-vitro studies consisted of growing G. oryzae on medium having different concentrations of the following nine fungicides, Bavistin, Benlate, Blitox, Brassicol, Delan (dithanon), Dithane M-45, Dithane Z- 78, Topsin-M and Vitavax following the method described. Each treatment and control were replicated five times. Incubation was same as described before. Radial growth of the colony was measured in two directions at right angles to each other after 7 days. Percent growth inhabitation in each cone. was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present studies Bavistin, Benlate, Brassicol, Topsin-M and Parasan-one completely eliminated the fungus from seeds. Although Dithane M-45 could not eliminate the fungus completely, it showed very good control. Therefore, in movement of the genetic materials throughout the world. rice seed could be freed from G. oryzae by treating with any of these chemicals and thus eliminating or reducing the risk of spreading the fungus through seed stock. In any case it will be advisable to avoid the mercurials like parasan-one.
