Silkworm Breeding and Selection of Improved Hybrid Lines.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three cross breeding experiments involving crosses among local, exotic and evolved strains of silkworm were conducted in which ten, eight and six generations respectively were completed. Final selection was based on the longer filament length and higher cocoon-shell ratio. Eleven hybrid lines were found superior to their parents and among them three hybrid lines may be selected as improved lines.

Methodology:

Expt. No. I. Selection of improved hybrid lines evolved out of crosses among exotic races and local or evolved strains of silkworm: This experiment was initiated in November, 1986 to complete its F₁₀ generation in June, 1989. Four exotic races (C₂_,C₂C₁_,C₃C₁' C₃) and four evolved lines were used in this cross breeding experiment. The eight hybrid lines thus obtained were as follows: Code name I Female x Male I Remarks MW 001 C₂C₁XC₂C₁=Ziangsu 12(P) MW 002 C₂x C₂C₁C₂_, - Nannong73(M) MW 003 C₃C₁xC₃C₃=Dong 34(M) MW 004 C₃ xC₃C₁ MY 005 L_l C₁xL1 L_l =SY 010 MY 006 L₁xL₁ C₁ MY 007 L₄C₂xL₄ L.=MBY 052(P) MY 008 L₄xL₄C₂ The first four lines represent crosses among the Chinese hybrid lines and their parents while the remaining four are the lines evolved out of crosses among the local strains and hybrids involving local and Chinese races. For hybridization, a number of cocoons were cut open with a blade and five female and five male pupae from each parental race/line were selected. After the emergence of the adult, the females were allowed to mate with the males as shown in the layout. After six hours of mating the five females from each line were kept under cover for oviposition. When the eggs hatched all the larvae from each line were reared in separate trays of 1 sq. ft. area each. After second moult 100 larvae from each line were reared separately. Results were based on average data of ten generations. Number of eggs of each laying for five months of each hybrid line in each generation was counted and average number was calculated and hatchability was found out. To find out the weight of cocoon each of male and female cocoon weight was calculated followed by taking of their average cocoon weight. The cocoon shell ratio in each generation was based on the weight of five pair of both male and female cocoons of respective hybrid lines. The filament length of a single cocoon was found out from each of the cocoons of each hybrid line in each generation. The average results of ten generations were presented. Expt. No.2. Achievement/Findings:

The three cross breeding experiments included data from six to ten' generations allowing chances for segregation of the desired traits like production of silk quantity quantified by the length of silk filament and cocoon- shell ratio. Among the eleven better hybrid lines evolved only three may be given selection and sent to BSRTI, Rajshahi for trial before releasing to the farmers.
