Serum Immunoglobulins in Cattle with Gastro-intestinal Parasites

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was undertaken to measure the total serum immunoglobulins in cattle with a number of naturally occurring gastro-intestinal parasitic diseases. Parasitic diseases were diagnosed by direct fecal examination of eggs and after floatation with Sodium chloride. Blood samples were also collected from those animals and sera were subsequently collected and stored at -20°C. New Born calfs sera were used as control. Total serum Immunoglobulins were measured by single radial immunodiffusion test. All the parasitic diseases have significantly increased level of immunoglobulins compared to control animals.

Objectives:

To measure the total serum immunoglobulins in cattle with a number of naturally occurring gastro-intestinal parasitic diseases.

Methodology:

The studies was carried out on the cattle of Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm and University Veterinary Hospital. Diagnosis of Parasitic infections: This was done by direct examination of the fecal samples and also by floatation with saturated Sodium Chloride. Collection of Bovine Sera: Blood was collected from Jugular vein and left for clotting at room temperature. The sera were collected by contrifugation at 3000 g and stored at -20°C until use. Measurement of Immunoglobulins from sera: Pooled bovine serum was used for purification of bovine Immunoglobulins.
