Effect of Different Doses of Herbicide Paraquat 24% (cleanoxone 240 Sl) to Control Weed on Banana Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted at the HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during the period from January 2013 to September 2014 to find out the optimum dose of herbicide to control weed in the banana field. Five treatments i.e. T₁: spraying of paraquat 24% (Cleanoxone 240 SL) @ 2.0 ml / Litre of water, T₂: spraying of Paraquat 24% @ 3.0 ml / Litre of water, T₃: spraying of Paraquat 24% @ 4.0 ml / Litre of water, T₄:Two hand weeding at 25 & 50 DAE (Days after Establishment) and T₅: no spray (Control) were included in this study. Results showed that number of weed/m² and weed control efficiency (WCE) were influenced by different weed management methods. The highest (122 and 240) weeds/m² were recorded in control plot at 25 & 50 DAE, respectively. The lowest (27 and 80) weeds/m²were recorded in T₂ followed by T₃ treatment respectively. The highest weed control efficiency 82.35% was found in T₂ treatment at 25 DAE followed by T₃ treatment (81.73%). The results revealed that spraying of herbicide (Cleanoxone 240 SL @ 3.0 ml / litre of water) was most effective in controlling weeds upto 20-25 days of herbicide spraying.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum dose of herbicide to control weed in banana field

To study the effect of herbicide on growth and yield of banana

Methodology:

The Experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Field, Horticulture Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during January 2013 to September 2014. The soil was silty clay loam with P^H 6.3 belonging to agro Ecological Zone 28. The treatments were T₁:spraying of paraquat 24% (Cleanoxone 240 SL) @ 2.0 ml / Litre of water, T₂: spraying of Paraquat 24% @ 3.0 ml / Litre of water, T₃: spraying of Paraquat 24% @ 4.0 ml / Litre of water, T₄:Two hand weeding at 25 & 50 DAE (Days after Establishment) and T₅: no spray (Control). The trial was set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 x 4m. The fertilizer were applied as basal doses cowdung 10kg, TSP 300g and gypsum 200g per pit. 450g Muriate of potash and 600g urea per pit were applied at four split doses starts two months after planting. Suckers of banana were sown on 11 January 2014. Herbicide spray was done 25 April. A light irrigation was given after sowing for uniform growth of the pseudostems. Weed samples were collected using 1m X 1m quadrate, from randomly selected one places of each plot at 25 days interval in two times. Number and dry weight of weeds were recorded. Weed control efficiency (WCE) was calculated according to Varshney (1999) using following formula : WCE (%)= X 100 where a= Dry weight of weeds in no weeding plots and B= Dry weight of weeds in treated plots. Data were recorded and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that spraying of herbicide paraquat 24% (Cleanoxone 240 SL) @ 3.0 ml / litre of water was found most effective to control weeds for banana production up to 25 days after herbicide spraying.
