Screening for Promising Germplasm of Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six different experiments including germ plasm evaluation and maintenance have been conducted in the year 1988-89 under the Groundnut Breeding Project, one of the component of Integrated Oilseed Research Project ( IORP). In high yielding groundnut varietal trial varieties like ICGS-30, Robut-33-1. ICGS-4 & ICGS-66 were found high yielder wjth the yield potentialities of 3042kg, 2913kg, 2692kg & 2617 kg per hectare yield. In elite groundnut cultivars trial varieties J L-24 (2656 kg/ha) & RS 138 produced maximum yield. In foliar disease resistance trial only the variety NCAC-1790 produced very good yield (2660 kg/ha). In confectionery trial some of the varieties produced moderate yield. The variety ( HYQLCG ) S-18 produced moderate yield (2027 kg/ha ) but having the boldest seed size (65 gm/100 kernel weight). About three hundred and forty genotypes of diverse origin have been studied in the observational trial and out of these only 22 genotypes were found to produce good yield with good agronomic characters.

Objectives:

To develop early maturing high yielding varieties of groundnut, confectionery qualities of groundnut such as bold and uniform seed size, limited seed dormancy and long viability are also considered to be very much important for groundnut improvement.

Methodology:

Six experiments including the germ- plasm maintenance and evaluation were as follows : 26. High yielding Groundnut Varietal Trial with 16 varieties. 1. Elite Groundnut Cultivars Trial with 16 varieties. 1. Confectionery Groundnut Varietal Trial with 11 varieties. 1. Foliar Disease Resistance Ground- nut Varietal Trial with 13 varieties. 1. Pest Resistant Groundnut Varietal Trial with 20 varieties. 1. Germ plasm maintenance and evaluation with 340 genotypes. The method s used for all th e experiments except germ plasm maintenance and evaluation were same and were as follows: Plot size: 1.2m x 4.0m Design Ramdomized Bloock Design with 3 replications. Spacing: Inter-row 30 cm. Intra- row 10 cm. Fertilizer: NPK at the rate of 20-60-40 kg/ha and Casory (Gypsum) at the rate of 300 kg/ha. The entire amount of N PK were applied at the time of final land preparation and Gypsum was applied by three installments at pegg- ing stage with 10 days interval. Date of : 18-11-88 to 22-11-88 sowing Weeding: Two times. Data on 12 different characters have been recorded from 10 randomly selected plants taking from each replication. The most important characters will be discussed in this paper with necessary tables. Land preparation for germplasrn was same as the other experiments including spacing, fertilization etc. But the seeds were sown without replication for lacking of seeds. The seeds were sown on 22.11.88 with only two rows of 4m length.
