Response of Mungbean to Flooding at Vegetative Stage Ii. Multivariate Analysis for Flooding Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

. About 51% of the total variability in flooding tolerance characteristics were accounted for relative total dry matter (TDM) and relative net assimilation rate (NAR) and that of 29% for relative leaf area and relative root dry weight (DW). The genotypes were grouped into four discrete clusters. Nine genotypes showed outstanding relative growth attributes compared to the genotypes of other groups and classified as flooding tolerant. Eleven genotypes showed better recovery in root growth, but the other growth attributes were affected by flooding to a large extent. The NAR and TDM of 13 genotypes were considerably reduced due to flooding. However, four genotypes had high negative relative TDM, relative leaf area and relative NAR with minimal adventitious root and classified as highly susceptible. The genotypes under first three groups had flooding tolerance but in varying degrees. The flooding tolerance of the genotypes was associated with post-stress rapid recovery in growth attributes.

Objectives:

To identify the genotypes for flooding tolerance based on the flooding induced plant injury and the extent of recovery thereof during the post-flooding period.

Methodology:

Forty selected mungbean genotypes were used in the experiment. The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahmam Agricultural University Farm during June and July 2000 and the genotypes received uniform cultural and management inputs until 18 days after emergence (DAE) when 50% of the plants of each genotype were subjected to soil flooding for five days. Flooding treatment was terminated on 23 DAE. Plants of each genotype were sampled immediately prior to imposition of flooding treatment. Repeated samplings were made harvesting both flooded and non-flooded plants on 23 DAE and 30 DAE. Observations on the changes in morphological characters and growth attributes were recorded using the dry weight of plant components and leaf area. However, the trend in dry matter accumulation and the contribution of individual components to total DM was similar to that observed in earlier study (Islam, 2003). Thus data on TDM accumulation, root dry matter, leaf area, net assimilation rate and root: shoot ratio only have been considered and the relative performance (over control) of the these traits were used in the descriptive and multivariate analyses. Analysis of genetic variation among 40 mungbean genotypes for flooding stress was performed and followed three steps: Estimation of the degree of correlation among the different plant characters ,derivation of variables using principal components analysis (PCA) based on the correlation matrix and classification of genotypes into homogenous groups by the non-hierarchical k-means technique of cluster analysis.
