Screening of Country Bean Germplasm Lines to Major Diseases Under Natural Field Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty one germ plasm lines of country bean sown at two different dates, early and optimum, in the performance trial plots of the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensigh in 1988-89 were evaluated against anthracnose, cercospora leaf spot and bean common mosaic under natural field conditions. Of all the lines, DS-108 against cercospora leaf spot, DS-108 and DS-108 x 30 against anthracnose and DS-30 x 109 against bean common mosaic were resistant at the early sowing. No line was found resistant to any of the selected diseases at optimum sowing. The rest lines showed wide variety of reaction starting from moderately resistant to susceptible reaction at both the sowing dates. In general, the germ plasm line s sown early in the season were less susceptible than those planted at the optimum period of sowing.

Objectives:

To study the screening of country bean germ plasm lines to major diseases under natural field conditions

Methodology:

The reaction of country bean germ- plasm lines were observed against three major diseases, coconspirator leaf spot and been common mosaic diseases at two different dates of sowing in the performance, trial. plots of the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The two different dates of sowing included were 'early' (14^thMay, 1989) and 'optimum' (5^th June. 1989). For 'early' and optimum' sowing,. 23 and 8 lines were used, respectively. In case of anthracnose, the disease records were taken when the plants were in full bearing stage. The reaction of the test germ plasm lines were determined on the basis of pod infection. One hundred pods were randomly , selected and tagged for recording data for each germ plasm .line. Data ,were taken twice at 15 days interval. All the selected pods were, graded according to the following numerical scores .
