Study on Beneficial Impact of Biogas as Cooking Fuel on Human Life and on Environment in Gazipur and Dhaka

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to evaluate the beneficial impact of biogas as cooking fuel on human life at Sreepur, Kaliakair, Uttara and Mirpur-II areas in Gazipur and Dhaka district. A survey was conducted to collect data from 20 samples of biogas plants installed in that study areas. Biogas technology altered the invaluable materials to valuable resources that met the cooking fuel demand of human and improved the environment. 90% biogas was used for cooking purposes, 5% was used for generating electricity and 5% biogas was used for lighting hazak. According to the field survey, it was estimated that only 6 cows, 300 poultry birds and 150 human could produce such amount of biogas that met the cooking fuel demand of 5 to 8 peoples in 3 times consecutively per day and this type of biogas plant required Tk. 15000/- installation cost. About 33% respondents used biogas to selling purposes and they earned 150-500 Tk. per month per each neighboring kitchen burner.

Objectives:

To evaluate the beneficial impact of biogas as cooking fuel on human life at Sreepur, Kaliakair, Uttara and Mirpur-II areas in Gazipur and Dhaka district.

Methodology:

The study included 20 biogas plants at different four selected areas. Primary data were collected by using the questionnaire through personal interview schedule with the active help of biogas holders of the selected areas and secondary data were obtained from GO's, NGO's, private companies, researchers publications, books, newspapers, journals, seminar papers, training guides, internet searching and unpublished research works. The material used for one bio-gas plant are as follows - brick (1300 nos.), cement ( 14 bags), sand (70 cft.), RCC pipe (7.5 ft.), gas pipe ( 100 ft.), digging of well (700 cft.), gas bulb (1), wax or plastic paint (2), burner (1), Hajak (1), mason ( 10 person) and helper (12 person). Installation cost of one biogas plant (m²) estimated from Sreepur, Kaliakair, Uttara and Mirpur-11 slum areas are ranged from 5777.78-7500.00 TK. Various sizes of biogas plants in four study areas are presented. After 7 days of construction, 90% of the digester (dome) should fulfilled by the raw materials. Cowdung, mixed with water as 1; 1 and 1:2 ratio is fed through the inlet tank into the biogas digester. Human excreta directly inter into the biogas digester with mixing water from latrines. Anaerobic fermentation or digestion of microorganisms generates biogas in the absence of air. After 30 days from cowdung based digester, 45 days from poultry dropping based digester and 28 days from human excreta based digester, biogas would be generated and pass it into Kitchen through gas pipe. After fermentation the produced biogas gather into the top ceiling of digester and pass it through gas pipe. The gas less slurry then begins to pass outside through outlet tank of hydraulic chamber.
