Biogas Slurry Uses and Human Response in Gazipur and Dhaka

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study was to determine the beneficial impact of biogas slurry on human life and their response on it at Sreepur, Kaliakair, Uttara and Mirpur-11 areas in Gazipur and Dhaka district. Among 20 samples of biogas plants, 2 were in Kaliakair, 7 were in Sreepur, 6 were in Uttara and 5 were in Mirpur- 11 Bouniabad Tinshed Koloni selected. Data were collected using personal interview schedule during 5 to 15 April 2006. Biogas technology altered the invaluable materials to valuable resources that also caused the enrichment of nutrient value in agricultural land and improved environment from various hazards. The extra resource biogas slurry produced from biogas plant enriched soil fertility and crop production. It was estimated that 50% of the biogas slurry was applied for crop production and it reduced about 1/3 amount (10 kg) of Urea and 1/2 amount (10 kg) of TSP fertilizer.

Objectives:

To determine the beneficial impact of biogas slurry on human life and their response on it at Sreepur, Kaliakair, Uttara and Mirpur-11 areas in Gazipur and Dhaka district.

Methodology:

The site for the study was selected in agro based sub rural or suburban area where there have no natural (Titas) gas supply pipelines.Three types of wastes such as cowdung, poultry dropping and human excreta (raw materials for generating biogas) oriented biogas plants were selected. Data were collected by using the questionnaire through personal interview schedule during the working period. Data were also collected from GO's, NGO's, private companies, researchers publications, books, newspapers, journals, seminar papers, training guides, internet searching and unpublished research works. Human response was measured on the basis of inferences drawn from her overt actions and her verbal statements of feeling.Two item of scale was used to measure the response on environment of the respondents. The respondents indicated for each statement of the scale yes or no.

Biogas plant altered the useless materials to valuable energy resources and reduced the environmental pollution and Biogas slurry is the nutrient rich bio-fertilizer to enrich soil fertility for crop production. But all biogas holders were not conscious about biogas slurry so that about 30 slurry not was used for crop production. 5% biogas slurry was not collected due to the lack of storing spre or land. Biogas generation from cow dung wastes contributed two valuable resources such as biogas as Joking fuel and biogas slurry as bio-fertilizer. The present day regarding global environmental pollution can be reduced to a considerable extent by the judicious use of chemical fertilizers and increasing the use of of oranic matter rich biogas slurry from cowdung, poultry dropping and human excreta based biogas plants.
