Lntercropping of Yard Long Bean with Chilli Under Different Sowing Time and Plant Population

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two years field experiment was conducted at farmers' field in Hathazari, Chittagong, Bangladesh to identify the proper plant population and optimum sowing time of yard long bean intercropped with chilli in respect of yield and economic return. Treatments were: sole chilli, Yard long bean (YLB) sowing with Chilli at the same time (lo^th December) and 30, 60 and 90 days after chilli planting with YLB population of 10, 20 and 30%. The intercropping systems of Chilli and yard long bean showed significant response to sowing time and plant population of yard long bean in Chilli field. Among all the treatment combinations, 20% yard long bean populations (4444 population ha^-1) sown at the time of Chilli planting (l0^th December) was found better in terms of chilli equivalent yield, gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio (4.16).

Objectives:

To find out the proper sowing time and appropriate plant population of yard long bean in terms of yield and economic return of Chilli and yard long bean intercropping systems.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at farmer's field in Hathazari, Chittagong in a randomized complete block design with four dispersed replications during December to May In 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 respectively. Thirteen treatments were accommodated such as sale chilli (S₁), Yard long bean (YLB) sowing at the same time of chilli planting (STCP) + YLB population 10 (S₂), 20 (S₃) and 30 % (S₄), YLB sowing at 30 days after chilli planting (DACP) + YLB population 10 (S₅), 20 (S₆) and 30 % (S₇), YLB sowing at 60 days after chilli planting + YLB population 10 (S₈), 20 (S9) and 30 % (S₁₀), YLB sowing at 90 days after chilli planting + YLB population 10 (S₁₁), 20 (S₁₂) and 30 % (S₁₃). Unit plot size was 6m x 3m. Spacing of sale Chilli and sale yard long beans were 50 cmx 30 cm (66,666 population ha^-1 and 150 cmx 30 cm (22,222 population ha^-1, respectively. Yard long bean spacing 150 x 300 cm, 150 x 150 cm and 150 x 100 cm were maintained for 10 % (2,222 population ha^-1, 20 % (4444 population ha^-1) and 30 % population (6,666 population ha^-1l, respectively. Chilli variety was Hathazari local while yard long bean variety was also local (pod type short and whitish - green in colour). Chilli was planted in the 10th December and yard long bean was sown as per treatments during 3^rd week of March to 3^rd week of May in both the years. Fertilizer was applied at 100 Kg N, 64 Kg P, 100 Kg K per hectare in the form of Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MP). Entire TSP and MP were applied as basal dose. Urea was applied in three equal splits at 15, 35 and 65 days after planting of chilli. Gap filling of chilli was done after 8 days of planting. Irrigation was applied 3 times at 15,35 and 65 days after planting. Weeding and earthing up were done at 20, 40 and 70 days after planting of chilli. Ripcord 10 EC @ 0.1% was applied against fruit borer and aphids for 3 times at an interval of 10 days. Chilli was harvested from second week of April to last week of May whereas green pod of YLB harvested from 3^rdweek of March to 2^ndweek of May. The yield attributing characters of chilli were collected from randomly selected ten plants but yield of dried chilli on whole plot basis and analysed statistically. In case of yard long bean, number and weight of yard long bean pods per plant and yield of green edible yard long bean pods were recorded. Chilli equivalent yield was calculated by converting yield of yard long bean to the yield of chilli on the basis of prevailing market prices of the individual crops. Chilli equivalent yield was calculated .Chilli equivalent yield = (Yield of yard long bean x Price of yard long bean)/ Price of chilli. Economic analysis were done in respect of gross return, total variable cost, gross margin and benefit-cost ratio.

Achievement/Findings:

Chilli and yard long bean intercropping system was more economical viable than growing sole chIlli. Considering cost benefit analysis, 20% (4444 population ha~~^-1~~) yard long bean plant population intercropped in chilli field sown at the same time of chilli planting (loth December) could be suggested for the chilli growing area particularly for agro-ecological zone 23 of Chlttagong region.
