Growth and Productivity of Mungbean at Varying Population Density

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted during March to June 1999 at BSMARU Farm, Gazipur on growth and productivity of mungbean (var. BARI mung 4) were evaluated at varying population density. There were four levels of population density viz. 20, 30, 40 and 50 plants m^-2. Plant population density exerted significant influences on growth and productivity of mungbean. Plant height, leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM) and crop growth rate (CGR) increased with the increase in plant population. Increasing population density significantly increased the TDM accumulation and its partitioning into plant components. Irrespective of population density the LAI and CGR were higher during rapid reproductive development. However, plant population had little influence on relative growth rate (RGR). On the contrary, increasing level of population density markedly decreased the net assimilation rate (NAR). Regardless of treatments, the RGR and NAR showed downward drift with the advancement of crop age. Increasing population density decreased the number of pods plant ^-1, seeds pod ^-1 and seed size, but higher number of plants per unit area compensated these and gave higher yield. The seed yield in mungbean increased by 45% with the increase in population density from 20 to 40 plants m^-2 and it declined thereafter with further increase in population density.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth and productivity of mungbean at varying population density.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangiadesh from March to June 1999. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 9.5m. The levels of population density were 20, 30, 40 and 50 plants m^-2 corresponding to line to line, and plant to plant distances of 30 x 16.67 cm, 30 x 11.11 cm 30 x 8.34 cm and 30 x 6.67 cm, respectively. Fertilizer N, P and K were applied @ 20,15 and 20 kg ha! in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Besides, cowdung was applied @ 10 t ha^-1. Half of the amount of urea and full doses of other fertilizers along with cowdung was applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining half of urea was top-dressed at flowering initiation. Mungbean seeds (var. BARI Mung-4) were sown in lines on 19 March 1999. After emergence the crop was thinned so as to maintain the desired population density mentioned above. A light irrigation was done just after sowing of seeds to facilitate uniform seedling emergence. Seedlings emerged out within five days of sowing and second irrigation was done at 15 DAE. Weeding was done at 15 and 30 DAE. Plants were sampled from 0.5 linear meters from each plot at 7-day interval starting from 15 to 78 DAE Plant height was measured from ten plants in each sample. The plants were segmented into leaf. petiole, stem and reproductive parts. Leaf area was measured.. The segmented plant components were oven dried at 70⁰C for 72 hours and then weighed. On the basis of leaf area and dry weight the LAl. CGR, RGR and NAR were computed. Seed yield was recorded from an area of 3 m² in each unit plot. Data on yield component were recorded from randomly selected plants. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and the means were compared by least significant difference (LSD) test.

Result of the study implies that for optimum growth and productivity of mungbean (var. BARI Mung-4l), 40 plants m^-2 might be the optimum population density for Madhupur Tract soils.
