Evaluation of Indigenous Medicinal Plants in the Treatment of External Wounds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The therapeutic effect of various herbal preparations on wound healing in goat was evaluated. The shortest healing time was obtained with 30% Durba extract while the longest time was observed with Vaseline (control). Herbal extracts were found to be more effective in wound healing than herbal ointment. The granulation tissue appeared from the 3rd day onwards in all treatment groups while the pigmentation started from the 12th day. Cicatrisation was observed from the 15th day in the herbal treated groups whereas these changes were delayed until the 21 st day in the control group. Histological changes of the wounds treated with herbal ointment showed massive infiltration with pus cells which were scanty in the terramycin treated group.

Objectives:

To study the therapeutic value of some herbal preparations in the treatment of external wounds.

Methodology:

A total of 32 Black Bengal goats were used in the present investigation to evaluate the efficacy of herbal ointment and extact in the treatment of external wounds. The experimental animals were of same age, sex, breed and health status as far as possible. Three herbal plants have been used in the present study. They are Ganda (Tagetes patula), Durba (Cynodon dactylon) and Nim (Azadirecta indica). The experimental animals were divided into 8 groups with 4 animals in each group. Ointment of 15 and 30% strengths with vaseline as base were prepared with each of the ground materials and were preserved in 6 separate sterile plastic containers. The crude extracts were obtained from 3 different leaves and 15 and 30% strengths with distilled water were prepared. The operation sites were clipped, washed with soap and water, shaved and prepared with iosan (Ciba Geigy Ltd). Two incised wounds of 2.5 cm length were made on either side of lumbarvertebra parallel to 3rd lumbar transverse process following standard surgical procedure.Ointment and extract prepared from Ganda, Durba and Nim, terramycin ointment and vaseline alone were applied to the wound twice daily until healing. Before application of the following agents, the wounds were cleansed using sterile cotton and normal saline. Tissues at 25 days of healing wounds of various groups were collected aseptically under local anaesthesia with 2% lidocain hydrochloride and were cut into pieces of 0.5 square inch size. The wound tissue containing epidermis and dermis were immediately fixed in 10% buffered neutral formaline. The well-fixed tissues were transferred to running water and after overnight washing were dehydrated through a series of ascending grades of alcohol and cleared into changes of chloroform. Finally the tissues were cooked and embedded in a hard paraffin (58°C). Horizontal and vertical sections were cut at 5 microns using a rotatory hand microtome.
