Qualitative Characteristics of Jackfruit Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of twenty jackfruit germplasm was studied in the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2012-2013. Wide range of diversity was observed in respect of qualitative characteristics of jackfruit. Out of twenty germplasm, maximum (9) gave ellipsoid shaped fruit and others were clavate, spheroid and oblong shaped. Fruit colour varied from yellow to greenish yellow. Maximum germplasm was found spiny fruit surface except three germplasm (AH Joy-032, AH Joy-089, AH Joy-097) which showed smooth fruit surface. Spine shape were Intermediate to pointed. Four germplasm (AH Joy-029, AH Joy-032, AH Joy-059 and AH Joy-097) produced good attractive fruit and others produced intermediate to poor fruits. Pulps were yellow to light yellow in colour. Maximum germplasm were juicy to medium juicy except AH Joy-089 and AH Joy-092 which were less juicy. Bulb texture was soft to hard and only two germplasm shows high fibrousness and others were medium and low.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A survey was carried out in the central region of Bangladesh using questionnaire developed as per descriptor of jackfruit published by International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). Fruits from 40 germplasm were collected and five fruits from each accession analyzed in the laboratory, of Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur to study the fruit characteristics. Seeds of the accessions were planted in the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur on 01 July 2001. Planting distance was maintained 6 m x 3 m. A fertilizer dose of 300g TSP, 250g MOP and 20 kg cowdung per plant and subsequent irrigation were applied on 12-14 August 2012 after harvesting of fruits. The experimental plot was ploughed with power tiller just before applying fertilizer. Weeding was performed in the month March and April 2013. Unwanted branches were prunned off in September 2012. Data on different qualitative characteristics viz. fruit Shape, fruit colour, fruit surface, spine shape, attractiveness, pulp color, juiciness, pulp fibrousness and bulb texture were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the jackfruit germplasm a wide range of variation was exist regarding different qualitative characters, revealed a scope of improvement. Out of twenty germplasm, ellipsoid, clavate, spheroid and oblong shaped fruits were found. Fruit colour varied from yellow to greenish yellow. Maximum germplasm was found spiny fruit surface except three of them were smooth fruit surface. Fruits were attractive to poor. Pulps were yellow to light yellow in colour. Maximum germplasm were juicy to medium juicy but two were less juicy. Bulb texture was soft to hard.
