Genetic Divergence Study in Boro Rice Germplasm of Bangladesh During 2007-08.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To identify the close and distant varieties based on their yield components and geographic distribution, a total of 40 Boro rice varieties collected from different districts of Bangladesh were grown under transplanted condition with three replications. Mahalonobis’ D² and Canonical Vector Analysis methods were used to group the varieties based on their yield contributing characters. Based on D² analysis, the germplasm were grouped into six (6) clusters with a wide range of intra (0.00 for cluster VI to 2.379 for cluster V) and inter cluster (3.926 between cluster III & IV to 17.156 between cluster II & VI) distances. D² values indicating the presence of substantial genetic diversity in the materials studied. Most of the germplasm were traditional but they showed high variability between them which was revealed from the results of intra and inter cluster distance values. Here the highest intra cluster value was 2.379 and the highest inter cluster value was 17.156, which clearly indicated variability’s in the germplasm of different clusters. However, lower values in clusters IV (0.765) and VI (0.0) were observed due to lower variation in all morpho-agronomic data within these groups. The highest intra cluster value (2.379) in cluster V was observed due to the presence of maximum number of traditional and Boro Pure line genotypes. Though all the rice germplasm were local Boro, but they showed relatively high D² values. It is also important to mention here that intra cluster distances were lower that showed variability within the cluster was also lower. Mean performance of different clusters for the characters studied revealed that dwarf stature, short growth duration, lower panicle length and low yielding (t/ha) varieties were clubbed into cluster I, whereas long plant height, longer durated and higher panicle length with higher filled grains per panicle varieties were clubbed into cluster IV, whereas and cluster II, III, and IV included moderate plant height, duration, and 1000 grain weight with moderate to high yielding genotypes. It was also noticeable that yield performances in six clusters were low and less variable. On the other hand, cluster V showed moderate plant height, highest grain length breadth with 1000 grain weight and moderate other yield contributing characters. Variations were comparatively high in respect of their yield. From the above discussion, it can be concluded that all these Boro genotypes are genetically distant from each other.

Methodology:

A total of 40 Boro rice varieties collected from different districts of Bangladesh were grown under transplanted condition with three replications using single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 X 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively. The unit plot size was 5.4 m long row each per entry. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:60:40 Kg NPK/ha. Control measures for pests, diseases and weed were taken whenever necessary. Morpho-agronomic and yield contributing data were recorded to study the diversity. Mahalonobis’ D² and Canonical Vector Analysis methods were used to group the varieties based on their yield contributing characters.
