Integrated Nutrient Management in Relation to Soil Fertility and Yield Sustainability in Boro-t.aman Rice Cropping Pattern at Low Ganges River Flood Plain Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the farmers field of Farming System Research and Development site, lshan Gopalpur, Faridpur under Low Ganges River Floodplain soil (AEZ- 12) during 2000-01 to 2002-2003 to find out a cropping pattern based fertilizer recommendation and economic dose of fertilizer in boro (var. BRRI dhan29) - T.Aman rice (var. BRRI dhan39) cropping pattern. The experiment was conducted with six nutrient management packages with six dispersed replications in RCB design. The average grain yield data revealed that the integrated nutrient management practices for high yield goal produced highest grain yield 6.45 tha^-1 of Boro and 4.21 t ha^-1 of T.Aman rice, respectively. Cost and return analysis showed that highest gross margin Tk.70617 ha!^-1was obtained from INM but highest MBCR (6.21) was obtained from FRG'97 due to less cost of fertilizer. Nutrients uptake and balance showed that N and K were negative in all cases. Considering yield, economy and sustain soil health, FRG '97 recommended fertilizer dose could be suggested for low Ganges river floodplain area. Introduction

Objectives:

• To develop an agronomically /economically suitable combination of inorganic and organic fertilizers for sustaining higher crop yield, soil fertility and improving nutrient use efficiency.

• To determine the economic dose of fertilizer for pre-dominant cropping pattem (Boro- T .Aman).

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted with Boro-T.Aman rice cropping pattern for three cycles during 2000-01 to 2002-2003 in the Low Ganges River Floodplain soil (AEZ-12) at farmers field of FSRD site, Ishan Gopalpur, Faridpur. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with six dispersed replications having unit plot size 6m x 5m. The crop cycle was started by transplanting boro rice in rabi (winter) season of 2000-2001 followed by T.Aman rice in kharif-2 (monsoon) season. Before conducting the experiment, soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm depth of the plot and analyzed for fertilization and post harvest soil samples were also collected after completion of three cropping cycles. The chemical properties of the initial and post harvest soil are presented in Table-L. Six treatments were arranged for this pattern viz., T _I = soil test based estimated mineral fertilizer dose for moderate yield goal (EDI), T ₂= soil test based estimated mineral fertilizer dose for high yield goal (ED2), T ₃= Integrated nutrient management (INM) for high yield goal (T₂ + cow dung 5 tha^-I), T₄ = BARC fertilizer recommendation guide' 97 (FRG' 97) for the particular area, T₅= Farmers practice (FP) and T ₆ = Absolute control. The entire quantity of P, K, S and Zn were applied as basal during final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied as top dress in three equal splits at 10, 40 and 60 days after transplanting (DA T) i.e. after establishment of seedlings, maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages, respectively. Variety of Boro rice was BRRI dhan29 and for T.Aman BRRI dhan39 was used. In every years, forty-five days of Boro rice and thirty-five days old seedlings of T.Aman rice were transplanted maintaining spacing 25 cmx 15 cm. Weeding, spraying of pesticide and irrigation were done as and when necessary. The plant samples (grain + straw) were collected at maturity of the each crop taking 5 plants at random from each plot. The average of three years (2000-01 to 2002-03) data were collected and analyzed statistically following DMRT. Economic analysis, nutrient uptake and balance were also done.
