Study on the Impact of Rice Husk Briquette on Human Health

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey was conducted at six upazilas namely Mymensingh sadar, Ishwargonj, Trishal, Nandail, Gauripur and Phulpur of Mymensingh district. Data were collected from 10 rice husk briquette mill owners, 100 rice husk briquette mill workers and surrounding people, 10 rice husk briquette traders, 10 rice husk briquette users. During the operation of rice husk briquette mill smoke was generated continuously which polluted the surrounding environment that affects the workers and surrounding people's health. It was also found that any rice husk briquette mill did not have proper exhaust system. It was also found that about 76%, 65%, 71 %,47%, 54%, 82% of people suffered with irritation in eyes, irritation in skin, shortness of breath, fever, weakness and cough, respectively. It was found that at present rice husk briquette demand was high and main customers were small hotel owner. About 80% of users used rice husk briquette because it was more efficient and did not produce smoke during burning as much as produced by chopping wood.

Objectives:

To know the rice husk briquetting on human health and to explore the environmental effect of rice husk briquetting.

Methodology:

The survey was conducted to the different upazila of Mymensingh district, namely, Mymensingh sadar, Phulpur, Trishal, Ishwargonj, Gauripur and Nandail. The data were collected from 10 Rice Husk Briquette mill owners,100 rice husk briquette mill workers and peoples of surrounding mill, 10 traders of rice husk briquette and 20 users of rice husk briquette from 15 February to 25 March, 2006. Direct questions, open form questions and different scales were used to obtained reliable information. The questions were arranged systematically and presented clearly. The draft interview schedule was pre-tested with one rice husk briquette mill and its surrounding five peoples before finally using the same for data collection. Data was collected in local unit. These were subsequently converted into appropriate standard units. After completion of field survey, the information obtained from all the respondents were coded, compiled and tabulated. The responses to the questions in the interview schedule were transferred to a master sheet to facilitate tabulation. The selected variables in this study are types of husk, problem of damp husk, types of fuel, fuel trader opinion, user opinion, age. level of education, irritation in eye, irritation in skin, irritation in throat, fever, weakness, cough problem, dizziness and nausea.
