A survey of bacterial soft rot and black leg of potato was carried out in 33 cold storage situated in three districts namely Bogra, Comilla and Munshigonj and in 252 potato fields of different unions of the above districts of Bangladesh. The survey revealed that the tot al loss due to soft rot in 33 cold storage amounted to 27, 33. 534 kg and estimated value of which is Tk. twenty one million eight lakh sixty eight thousand two hundred and seventy two (Tk 21,8.68.272). The average soft rotted tubers in different cold storage was 3.18%. The incidence of black leg was found to be 297% in the field survey. Erwinia cerotovore sub sp. cerotovore, Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. were found to be associated with the soft rot. The percentage of Erwinia carotavora sub sp, carotovora (73.07%), Pseudomonas spp. ( 7.69%) and Bacillus spp. (15.38%) were determined by several biochemical test and finally by pathogenicity tests. The Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus  spp. were found to cause soft rot of tuber at a very high temperature range (28-330C).

To study  the loss estimate in storage and in field due to black leg and soft rot diseases of potato .

 Seventeen cold storage in 3 upazillas of Munshigonj 7 cold storage in 2 upazillas of Bogra and 9 cold storage in 3 Upazillas of Comilla were selected during August 1988 to survey the incidence of bacterial soft rot of potato. From each cold storage 3 bags of potato / cultivar were taken and weighed. The soft rotted tubers were separated and weighed to find out the loss due to the diseases. Finally the total loss was calculated for each cultivar and each storage. Four, cultivars of potato namely Multa, Petrones, Diamant and Cardinal were included in the study. b) In January and February 1989, a field survey on the prevalence of bacterial soft rot/black leg of potato was made in the same three districts. Under each district three Upazillas, under each Upazilla three unions, under each union three villages, under each village 3-5 fields and under each field 4 replicated plots ( 10'x10' ) were randomly selected for the survey. c) Samples of infected plants from the potato field and samples of diseased tubers from cold storage were collected during the survey. The infected portion from stem and tubers were cut open and aseptically isolated on the nutrient agar medium. Pathogenicity test was done by slices of potato tuber tissues of 0.5cm X 5.0cm size and biochemical tests were performed according to Hossian (1986).
