Extension Services to Farmers on Promising Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture so far developed and released 26 promising mutant varieties of different crop using induced mutation techniques. In order to popularize the mutant varieties, IAEA provided and users oriented TC project (No. BGD/5/019) during 1995-98. Under this project Extension works have been done in collaboration with DAE for diffusion and adoption of these mutants. Demonstration trials revealed that 14 mutant varieties have high yield potentials. Farmers were found interested to cultivate these promising mutant varieties. A country wide survey on adoption of BINA varieties depicts that about l0 % of total lands are cultivated by mutant varieties. Economic impact of mutant varieties revealed that an approximately 2942 million Taka is contributing by BINA varieties presently. Expected economic impact as estimated is also high. Recently developed 9 mutant varieties appeared to have high yield potential with other desirable agronomic attributes. Extensive promotional activities are essential for popularizing promising mutant varieties.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were: (1) to test mutant varieties of BINA through experimental demonstration as both extension and research functions in order to identify the suitable location(s) in different agro-ecological zones for large scale promotional activities; (2) to assess advantages and constraints of the developed technologies in existing cropping pattern, socioeconomic impact and (3) to formulate future research strategies.

Methodology:

Demonstration trials of 14 mutant varieties of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) were conducted throughout the country during 1995-2000. The yield potentials of the mutant varieties and farmers’ reactions were assessed. A countrywide survey on adoption BINA varieties and their economic impact were also assessed.
