Organic Production of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to produce safe and quality fruit through organic fertilizers conducted at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during September 2013 to July 2014. Vermicompost, tricocompost and cowdung was used as organic fertilizer. Cowdung give the highest number of secondary branches per panicle (31.68) followed by tricocompost (30.17) as compared to minimum (22.43) in control plants. Number of panicle/plant was noted the highest and identical in the treatments vermicompost (243.00), tricocompost (241.67) and cowdung (235.67), while control plants exhibited the lowest (27.67). Vermicompost exhibited the highest fruit set/panicle (24.40) and the lowest (11.53) in control. Finally at harvest, vermicompost had maximum number of fruits/panicle compared to minimum in control. The treatments tricocompost (117.33) and cowdung (115.67) resulted in the highest and identical number of fruits/plant as against the lowest (18.00) in control. Regardless of organic fertilizers fruit weight in all the treated plants were recorded higher compared to that of untreated control. Vermicompost (316.67 g) got the biggest fruit statistically similar to tricocompost (315.00 g) and cowdung (295.87 g), while smallest (263.33) in control. Maximum and identical yields were obtained from tricocompost (36.97 kg/plant) and cowdung (33.84 kg/plant). Untreated control produced minimum yield (4.80 kg/plant).

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of organic fertilizer on yield and quality of mango.

To find out the suitable organic fertilizer for organic mango production

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during September 2013 July 2014. The mango variety BARI Mango-4 was used in the study. The experiment was set following a randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Three different organic fertilizers i.e. cowdung, vermicompost, tricocompost, each @ 35 kg/plant and control (no fertilizer) were included as treatments in the study. Adequate care and management of the plants in the experiment were taken as per requirement. Data on the following parameters; plant height, base girth, canopy spread, length of terminal shoot at flowering, number of leaves per terminal shoot at flowering, number of secondary branches per panicle, number of panicle per plant, date of first panicle appearance, date of full bloom, fruit retention at an interval of 7 days, fruit characters TSS and yield were recorded. The collected data were tabulated and analyzed with appropriate design of experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) adopting a statistical programme MSTAC-C. The treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5 % level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that all types of organic fertilizers viz. cowdung, Vermicompost, Tricocompost performed well in terms of number of fruits, fruit weight as well as yield over control. The Vermicompost was found superior in fruit retention as well as number of fruits per plant while Tricocompost and cowdung found superior in fruit weight and yield.
