Effect of Growth Regulator and Other Chemical on Vegetative and Panicle Characters of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to investigate the effects of growth regulator on vegetative and panicle characters of mango was carried out at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the period from September 2014 to August 2014. Six treatments namely NAA 40 ppm, NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%, 2,4-D 12 ppm, 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4%, urea at 4% and control (water spray) were included in the study. Growth regulator and other chemical exerted significant influence on different characteristics except number of leaves/terminal shoot and length of panicle. Control plants exhibited the longest plant (468.33 cm) as against the shortest plant (305.00 cm) in NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%. Base girth and canopy spread (N-S and E-W) were also recorded higher in NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%. The longest terminal shoot (19.60 cm) was noted in the plants treated with NAA 40 ppm and the shortest was (15.17 cm) in 2,4-D 12 ppm. Maximum number of secondary branch/panicle (23.93) was recorded in NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4% as compared to that of minimum (16.43) in untreated control. Date of full bloom varied from 07.03.14 to 15.03.14 and control got earliest full bloom.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during September 2013 July 2014. BARI Mango-4 was used in the study as variety. The experiment was laid out in a randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatments were NAA 40 ppm, 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4%, 2,4-D 12 ppm, NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%, urea at 4% and control (water spray). Spraying of each treatment was done twice; once at pea stage and another one at marble stage of the fruit. Two sprays; first spray with Tilt @ 0.5 ml/L and Ripcord @ 1 ml/L was applied before flower opening and after panicle emergence and the second spray was done at the pea stage of fruits. The data on plant height, base girth, canopy spread, length of terminal shoot at flowering, number of leaves per terminal shoot at flowering, length of panicle, number of secondary branches per panicle, number of panicle per plant, date of first panicle appearance, date of full bloom. The collected data were tabulated and statistically analyzed with appropriate design of experiment adopting a statistical programme MSTAC-C. The treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5 % level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that control plants exhibited the longest plant. Base girth and canopy spread were recorded higher in NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%. The longest terminal shoot was noted in the plants treated with NAA 40 ppm. Maximum number of secondary branch/panicle was recorded in NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%. The untreated control exhibited earliest full bloom than treated plant.
