Nuclear Energy for Increase and Sustainable Crop Production in Bangladesh-present and Future Research Strategies

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Agriculture is central in socio-economic development of Bangladesh. Yield gap between potential and average levels has been widened due to increased soil degradation, shrinkage of water reservoir, soil salinity and moisture deficits and biotic stresses. Tools of nuclear energy are widely conceived of being capable to address the yield reduction attributes. Consistent increase in population growth together with these given problems versus present and future crop and food productions strategies must consider germplasm enhancement particularly for drought and saline agriculture, soil-water-crop management issues, genetic conservation and bio-diversity, development and management of hybrid and super varieties, cellular and metabolic process research for sustainable yield in changing agro-climates, and finally molecular and related biotechnological research for the development of super varieties, pest management and higher biological N₂-fixation for legume/non legume crops. By this time with the aids of nuclear energy, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), has developed 30 new crop varieties apart from 6 different N₂-fixing biofertilizers.
