Acquisition of Bacterial Flora in Genital Tracts of Female Buffaloes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Samples for this study comprised of swabs from internal surface of vagina, cervix and uterus of female buffaloes slaughtered at local abattoirs. A total of 90 samples from 30 buffaloes were collected to determine the bacteriological status. The different parts of the genital organs demonstrated the presence of Staphylococcus aureous, Streptococus pyogenes, Escherichia coli. Bacillus spp. Proteus spp. and Klebsiella spp.

Objectives:

To find out the bacterial acquisition which could identify the pathological changes in the genitalia causing reproductive disorders and infertility.

Methodology:

Samples for this study comprised of swabs from internal surface of vagina, cervix and uterus from 30 female buffaloes slaughtered at local abattoirs. Due aseptic care was undertaken to obtain total 90 swab samples, 30 from each of the organs. Using sterile instruments and hot spatula, the external surface of the above organs were seared and opened. The swab samples so obtained were transported to appropriate sterile screw capped test tubes containing nutrient broth culture. The samples were kept cool in ice boxes and brought to the laboratory for subsequent studies to determine the bacteriological status. The preparation and examination of samples for bacteriological studies were performed following standard methods.

Achievement/Findings:

The microbial profile of different parts of female genital tract is determined. Staphylococcus aureus ranked the highest percentage in all three organs viz., vagina (66.67%), cervix (63.33%) and uterus (10.00%). This is analogously followed by steptococcus pyogenes which are presented as 36.67%, 30.00% and 6.67% in vagina, cervix and in uterus respectively. Other organisms found were Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp. Proteus spp. and Klebsiella spp.
