Effect of Growth Regulator and Other Chemical on Fruit Retention of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to investigate the effects of growth regulator on vegetative and panicle characters of mango was carried out at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the period from September 2014 to August 2014. Six treatments namely NAA 40 ppm, NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%, 2,4-D 12 ppm, 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4%, urea at 4% and control (water spray) were included in the study. Highly significant variations were observed in respect to fruit set as well as onward fruit retention/panicle. NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4% exhibited the highest fruit set/panicle (28.23) closely followed by urea 4% (27.13). The initial fruit set/panicle (20.57) was recorded the lowest in 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4% followed by urea 4% (21.20). On 30.03.14, NAA 40 ppm resulted in maximum fruits retained/panicle (14.90). On 06.04.14 and 13.04.14, the highest fruit retention/panicle (5.83 and 4.03, respectively) was noted in 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4% which was statistically identical to those of urea at 4% (5.13 and 3.30, respectively). From 20.04.14 to date of fruit harvest, 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4% exhibited higher fruit retention/panicle and it was 1.87 at harvest closely followed by urea 4% (1.67). Always from fruit set to fruit harvest, control plants showed the lowest fruit set per panicle which was 0.33 at harvest.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of growth regulator and other chemical on fruit set and fruit retention of mango

To find out the appropriate doses of growth regulator along with other chemical on fruit set and maximizing number of fruit per plant of mango

To minimized fruit dropping as well as increase fruit retention in mango by using growth regulators

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during September 2013 July 2014. BARI Mango-4 was used in the study as variety. The experiment was laid out in a randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatments were NAA 40 ppm, 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4%, 2,4-D 12 ppm, NAA 40 ppm + urea at 4%, urea at 4% and control (water spray). Spraying of each treatment was done twice; once at pea stage and another one at marble stage of the fruit. Two sprays; first spray with Tilt @ 0.5 ml/L and Ripcord @ 1 ml/L was applied before flower opening and after panicle emergence and the second spray was done at the pea stage of fruits. The data on fruit set per panicle, fruit retention from fruit set to fruit harvest at an interval of 7 days . The collected data were tabulated and statistically analyzed with appropriate design of experiment adopting a statistical programme MSTAC-C. The treatment means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5 % level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that highly significant variations were observed in respect to fruit set as well as onward fruit retention/panicle. At initial stage fruit retention was the highest in the panicle treated with NAA 40 ppm onward that was highest in 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4%. At harvest that was found the highest in 2,4-D 12 ppm + urea at 4% and only Urea at 4% The untreated control exhibited less fruit set and minimum fruit retention.
