Comparative Performance of Different Winter Vegetables as Intercropped with Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at FSRD site, Ishan Gopalpur, Faridpur during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 to study the comparative performance of different winter vegetables intercropped with sugarcane for higher agronomic and economic return of the sugarcane intercropping systems. Red amaranth, tomato, spinach, cabbage and turnip were grown with sugarcane. Economic analysis of sole sugarcane and sugarcane based intercropping systems showed that cabbage when intercropped with sugarcane gave the highest sugarcane equivalent yield (233.53 t ha^-1), gross return (Tk. 252212 ha^-1), gross margin (Tk. 185642 ha^-1) and benefit-cost ratio (3.78) in two consecutive years. However, tomato intercropped with sugarcane at par with cabbage + sugarcane intercrop system in respect of sugarcane equivalent yield.

Objectives:

To observe the performance of some winter vegetables crop as intercropped with paired row transplanted sugarcane.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Farming systems research and development site, lshan Gopalpur, Faridpur During 1998-99 and 1999-2000.The experiment was laid out in RCB design with four replications. The unit plot size was 5.4m x 5m. The variety of sugarcane was Isd 21. Sugarcane setts were planted as double row planting system on 24th December in the year of 1998 and 1999. Line to line spacing was 60 cm and spacing between two pairs of sugarcane was 120 cm. Before sowing seeds were treated with Bavistin. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 135-35-60-35-3 kg ha^-1 of N-P-K-S-Zn in sugarcane. All P, S, Zn, 50% N and P were applied as basal for sugarcane. The rest of N and P were applied as top dressed at 145 DAP. There were six treatment combinations included in the study viz. 0 sole sugarcane In sugarcane + red amaranth (BARI Lalshak-l) no sugarcane + tomato (Ratan) IV) sugarcane + spinach (Local) V) sugarcane + cabbage (Provati) and VI) sugarcane + turnip. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 105-18-60-10 kg ha^-1 of N-P-K-S in cabbage and turnip, 25-5-25-5 kg ha^-1 of N-P-K-S-Zn in red amaranth, 50-20-25-5 kg ha^-1 of N-P-K-S in tomato, 30-5-35-15 kg ha^-1of N-P-K-S in spinach. Spacing was 60 cm x 60 cm in tomato and 60 cm x 40 cm in cabbage and turnip. Seeds of red amaranth and spinach were sown as broadcast in between two paired rows. Irrigation were applied at 5, 30 and 120 DAP. Intercultural operations such as mulching and weeding, earthing up, trashing and wrapping were done properly. Lorsban 15G @ kg ha! were applied in the furrow before planting of sugarcane setts to prevent attack of ants and termites. Red amaranth, tomato, spinach, cabbage and turnip were harvested during February to March in both the years. Sugarcane was harvested on 21st December of 1999 and 2000. Data on yield and local market price of all crops were collected. The cost of production included all variables and cost items. The variable cost items were casual labour, power tiller hired, seeds, manures, fertilizers, insecticides, transportation, irrigation charge. Gross return per hectare is expressed by the value of crops and by-products. The gross margin is derived by deducting the total variable cost from gross return. Sugarcane equivalent yield (SEY) was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

In the year 1998-99, no significant difference was observed on the yield of sugarcane as intercropped with red amaranth, tomato, spinach and turnip. The highest sugarcane equivalent yield (233.53 t ha^-1) was obtained from sugarcane+cabbage intercropping which was statistically identical with sugarcane+tomato intercropping (197.13 t ha^-1). The treatment sugarcane+spinach (140.31 t ha ^-1), sugarcane+turnip (138.71 t ha^-1) and sugarcane+red amaranth (123.93 t ha^-1) were identical though the highest yield was observed with sugarcane-spinach intercropping. All the intercrop treatments were superior over sole sugarcane. The result revealed that the profitability of intercropping was much higher than that of sale sugarcane . The highest gross return (Tk. 252212 ha^-1, gross margin (Tk.185642 ha^-1) and benefit- cost ratio (3.78) were obtained from sugarcane + cabbage combination in two consecutive years.
