Toxico-biochemical Studies of Quinalphos in Goat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Quinalphos in doses of 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg/day for 28 consecutive days induced mild to severe toxic symptoms characteristic of anti-cholinesterase poisoning in goat. One goat died on 22nd day of insecticide exposure following higher dose (2.0 mg/kg/day). Quinalphos at both doses (1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg/day) significantly inactivated serum cholinesterase (18-25%), whereas, SGOT and SGPT values were elevated significantly to the extent of 70-93 and 175-216 percent respectively in goat. The administration of atropine alone and in combination with DAM afforded only 33 and 66 percent protection, respectively against quinalphos induced toxicity and lethality in goat.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of different therapeutic agents i.e. atropine sulphate and Diacetylmonoxime (DAM) against quinalphos poisoning in goat.

Methodology:

Fifteen apparently healthy male goats weighing between 15-18 kg were purchased from the local market and kept in departmental animal shed for one week prior to the commencement of the experiment. The animals were maintained on green grasses of the season and water ad libitum. Nine goats were randomly divided into 3 groups each comprising of 3 animals. Group I goats were kept as control and were not given any insecticide. Group II and III goats were administered with quinalphos (Ekalux 25 EC (R) Rhone- Poulenc, Sandoz, Ltd, Switzerland) in doses of 1 and 2 mg/kg body wt daily for 28 consecutive days. The lower dose (1 mg/kg/day) of quinalphos selected in this study approximate to the amount that may be consumed by an average size goat from a freshly sprayed fodder with the recommended concentration of quinalphos on the basis of daily feed intake. The nature and time of appearance of various toxic signs and mortality, if any, were carefully recorded in insecticide exposed goats during administration period and also post-administration period of 14 days.
