Effect of Transplanting Depth, Seedling Age and Nitrogen Level on the Yield of Boro Rice Cv. BRRI Dhan29

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2004 to June 2005 with a view to investigating the effect of transplanting depth, seedling age and nitrogen level on the yield of Boro rice cv. BRRI dhan29. The levels of the experimental factors were: i) two transplanting depths viz., 5 cm and 10 cm, ii) two seedling ages viz, 35 day and 50 day old seedling, and iii) four nitrogen levels viz., 0 kg N/ha, 100 kg N/ha, 125 kg N/ha and 150 kg N/ha. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications assigning transplanting depth in the main plots, seedling age in the sub-plots and nitrogen level in the sub-sub plots. The results revealed that the effect of transplanting depth was significant in respect of yield. Higher grain yield (3.94 t/ha) was obtained from transplanting depth 5 cm, mainly contributed by the higher numbers of effective tillers/hill and lower grain yield (3.72 t/ha) was observed in 10 cm transplanting depth. The effect of seedling age was significant for all the yield attributes except plant height and harvest index. Higher grain yield (3.99 t/ha) was obtained from 35 day old seedling and lower one (3.67 t/ha) was obtained from 50 day old seedling. Nitrogen level also significantly influenced all the yield characters except 1000-grain weight. The highest grain yield (4.31 t/ha) was obtained from 100 kg N/ha and the lowest one (3.15 t/ha) was received with 0 kg N/ha. The interaction of transplanting depth and seedling age was statistically significant and the combination of 5 cm depth of transplanting x 35 day old seedling produced the highest grain yield (4.02 t/ha) and the lowest grain yield (3.47 t/ha) was found in transplanting depth 10 cm with 50 day old seedling. For most of the parameters, the other combinations like transplanting depth and nitrogen level, seedling age and nitrogen level and transplanting depth, seedling age and nitrogen level were insignificant.

Objectives:

To find out the effects of depth of transplanting, seedling age and dose of nitrogenous fertilizer and their interaction on yield of Bora rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2004 to June 2005 with a view to find out the effects of transplanting depth, seedling age and nitrogen level and their interaction on yield of Bora rice cv. BRRl dhan29. The experiment consisted of the following treatments. i) two transplanting depth viz. 5 cm and 10 cm ii) two seedling age viz. 35 day and 50 day, iii) four nitrogen level viz. 0, 100, 125 and 150 kg N/ha. The experimental site belongs to the Sonatola series of the dark grey flood plain soil type under old Brahmaputra flood plain Agro-ecological zone (AEZ-9). Achievement/Findings:

Based on the results of the experiment it can be concluded that the transplanting depth 5 cm was better than of transplanting depth 10 cm for transplanting of BRRI dhan29 in the bora season. The performance of 35 day old seedling was better in respect of grain yield than 50 day old seedling. Among the nitrogen level, 100 kg N/ha showed better performance in respect of grain than others. It may be also concluded that transplanting depth 5 cm and 35 day old seedling with 100 kg N/ha will be appropriate combination to produce the highest grain yield in BRRl dhan29
