Validity Performance of Two Pineapple Varieties in the Pineapple Growing Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A multi-locations trial of validity performance of two pineapple varieties were conduct at Gazipur, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Moulvibazar to find out the suitable pineapple variety for cultivation. Two pineapple varieties i.e. Honey Queen and Giant kew were used in the study. Due to Individual fruit weight, crown weight, TSS and number of slip sucker/palnt were significantly differed over location and varieties. In Rangamati and Khagrachari the pineapple was harvest between April-September and in Moulvibazar that was between June-September. The highest fruit weight (1225.83 g) was recorded in Rangamati followed by Gazipur (1162.50 g), while the lightest (953.33 g) in Moulvibazar. The highest crown weight (408.00 g) was observed in Gazipur and the lowest (368.50 g) in Moulvibazar. On the other hand the heaviest fruit (1419.92 g) and crown (501.33 g) were manifested in Giant kew and the lightest (822.00 and 284.08 g, respectively) in Honey Queen. Maximum number of slip suckers/plant (6.33) was noted in Khagracahri district and minmum (4.33) in Moulvibazar. No significant variation regarding TSS was observed among growing location. Between two varieties of pineapple, the highest TSS (18.26%) was manifested in Honey queen and the lowest was noticed in Giant kew variety (15.96%).

Objectives:

Adaptation/validation of the pineapple varieties were studied in the pineapple growing areas.

To evaluate the varietal performance and to recommend the superior one for the pineapple growing areas.

To select the suitable area for pineapple cultivation.

Methodology:

The validity performance of two pineapple varieties were conduct at Gazipur, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Moulvibazar to find out the suitable pineapple variety for cultivation during May 2012 to August 2014. The two pineapple varieties namely Honey queen and Giant kew were used in this experiment. In Rangamati, Khagrachari and Moulvibazar district the experiment were conduct at farmer’s field and under Gazipur the experiment was conduct at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in a randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Manuring and fertilization were done following the rate given below:

Cowdung, gypsum and TSP were mixed with soil at the time of land preparation. Urea and MP were used as top dressing at 5 installments after 4-5 months of planting. Data on flowering period, harvesting period, single fruit weight (g), crown weight (g), TSS (%), slip sucker/plant, edible portion (%), and yield (t/ha).The data were analyzed using CROPSTAT 7.

Achievement/Findings:

In Rangamati district, both the pineapple varieties exhibited superior performance in terms of fruit weight, TSS and number of slip sucker/plant which was closely followed by those of Khagrachari district. This study reveals that the hilly areas are most suitable for successful pineapple cultivation.
