A field experiment was conducted under irrigated medium highland during 2002-03 and 2003-2004 to evaluate different nutrient management packages for Potato- T.Aus- T.Aman rice cropping system at Kishoregonj (AEZ 9). Six nutrient management packages were tested of which four treatments were soil test based (STB) fertilizer dose for moderate and high yield goals (ED 1 and ED2), STB fertilizer dose (IPNS) for HYG plus cowdung @ (5 tha -1), fertilizer dose as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide (FRG'97) along with farmers' dose and control. Two years average results showed that IPNS treatment gave higher yield of crops compared to the other treatments. The mean yields of IPNS treatment were 20.54, 3.23 and 3.92 t ha-1 of Potato, T.Aus and T.Aman, respectively. The average yield of potato (21.55 tha-1) was higher in farmer's practice (FP) due to use of higher dose of organic and inorganic fertilizer. The average higher gross return and gross margin was recorded from IPNS treatment. But due to slightly higher cost of fertilizer in IPNS treatment higher MBCR (8.85) over control was obtained from farmers' practices (FP) followed by IPNS dose. Nutrients uptake and balance show that considerable amounts of N, P, K and S were being removed by crops every year. The N and K balances were negative in all cases. Considering over all yield and sustainable soil health, IPNS could be recommended for Kishoregonj area.

  1. To find out a cropping system based fertilizer dose of organic and inorganic sources of nutrients.
  2.  To determine the economic dose of nutrients for Potato- T.Aus- T.Aman rice cropping system for irrigated medium high land at Kishoregonj under AEZ-9.

The experiment was conducted over two consecutive years at farmers' field of Sadar ML T site Kishoregonj during the period from November 2002 to December 2004 under irrigated condition.  The potato cv. Diamant and rice cv. BR26 and BRRI dhan-32 were grown as the test crops in the pattern (Potato-T.Aus-T.Aman rice). There was a turn around time of 7-15 days between two crops. Each crop was grown for two seasons in the same layout. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with six dispersed replications. Six different fertilizer packages were tested and the details of the treatments were T 1 (ED1)= Estimated mineral fertilizer dose for moderate yield goal (MYG), T 2 (ED2)= Estimated mineral fertilizer dose for high yield goal (HYG) , T 3 (IPNS)= Integrated nutrient management for high yield goal, T 4 (FRG'97)= Fertilizer dose from BARC fertilizer recommendation guide'97, T5 (FP) = Local Farmer's practice (FP), (Survayed of 25 farmer's data) and T 6 (Control)= Absolute Control. The treatment concept was to compare the soil test based (STB) mineral fertilizer dose for High Yield Goal (HYG), Moderate Yield Gold (MYG), HYG with organic manure (cowdung) and fertilization based on BARC's Recommendation Guide'97 as well as the farmer's dose. In all the crops N, P, K and S were applied through urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. The field of potato, the first crop was prepared by tractor and ladder. In this crop the entire amount of P, K, S, cow dung and half N were applied during final land preparation according to the above described treatments. Remaining nitrogen was applied at the side of the row and covered with soil about 45 days after planting. Seeds were sown at the rate of 1500 kg ha-1 with 60 x 15cm spacing. Potato crop was planted on 4th week of November and harvested on 2nd week of March, respectively in both the years. After harvesting potato, the second crop T.Aus (BR26) was transplanted on the same plot. In subsequent crops of the pattern 50% P, 25% K and 50% S were reduced. The full doses of P, K and S were applied as broadcast and incorporated with soil during final land preparation according to the described treatments. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied as top dress in three equal splits. The first one third was applied at immediately after seedling establishment (15 DAT) and the second one third at rapid tillering stage (30-35 DAT) followed by weeding. The third installment was applied as broadcast at 5-7 days before panicle initiation (65-70 DAT). The seed rate was 30 kg ha! with spacing 20 x 15 cm. Thirty days-old seedlings of T.Aus rice crop was transplanted on 2nd week of May and harvested on 1st week of August, respectively both the years. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, and pest control were done according to requirement. Thirty-five days-old seedlings of third crop T.Aman rice was transplanted on 2nd week of August and harvested on 4th week of November, respectively both the years. Data on yield and yield attributes along with other parameters were collected properly and subjected to statistical analysis. Statistical analysis for F-test was performed and means were compared by DMRT. Economic analysis was done for gross return and marginal benefit cost ratio over control for different fertilizer treatments.

From two years study, it is apparent that the treatment IPNS is superior to other fertilizer management practices in respect of crop yield in Potato- T . Aus- T Aman rice cropping system. The highest gross margin (Tk. 165910 ha-1) was also found in the IPNS treatment. But marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) was found slightly higher in farmers practice (FP) due to higher fertilization cost involved in IPNS treatment. Considering overall yield, economic performance as well as soil fertility concern the IPNS practice could be recommended for Potato-T.Aus-T.Aman rice cropping pattern at Kishoregonj area.
