Interaction Effect of Fruit Thinning and Bagging on the Yield and Quality of Guava

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to study the effect of fruit thinning and bagging on the yield and quality of guava var. BARI Peyara-2 was conducted at HRC guava orchard, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during March to August 2013. Interaction effects fruit thinning and fruit bagging on the yield, yield attributes and quality of BARI Peyara-2 fruits. Individual fruit weight (269.60 g), fruit length (6.16 cm), fruit diameter (6.87 cm), mesocarp thickness (1.80 cm), TSS (%) of mesocarp (10.00) and endocarp (15.00) were noted higher in the treatment combination of T₃B₁ while fruit weight (171.1 g), fruit length (7.23 cm), fruit diameter (8.33 cm), mesocarp thickness (7.0 cm), TSS (%) of mesocarp (7.00) and endocarp (9.30) were noted higher in the treatment combination of T₄B₁. Number of fruits per plant (99.00), yield per plant (19.75 kg) and seeds per fruit (494.20) were attained maximum in the treatment combinations of T₄B₁and T₄B₃. The yield per plant was higher (19.75 kg) in T₄B₁ due to the cumulative effect of number of fruits per plant and positive effect of white polythene.

Objectives:

To investigate the interactive effects of fruit thinning and bagging on yield and quality of guava.

To find out the appropriate amount of fruit thinning along with types of bagging for guava

To select proper fruit thinning and bagging materials for higher yield and good quality of guava.

Methodology:

An experiment to study the effect of fruit thinning and bagging on the yield and quality of guava was conducted at HRC Fruit Orchard of RARS, Jamalpur during March to August 2013. Six years old BARI Peyara-2 plants of uniform growth were selected for the study.

The experiment comprised of two factors,

Factor A: four types of fruit thinning-

T₁ = 25% fruit thinning

T₂ = 50 % fruit thinning

T₃ = 75% fruit thinning and

T₄= No fruit thinning

Factor B: three types of bagging

B₁= Bagging with white polythene

B₂= Bagging with blue polythene and

B₂= Without bagging.

Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Hand thinning was done at marble stage of fruit from the plants in May 2013. The plants were fertilized with recommended doses of manure and fertilizers. Weeding, irrigation and insect pest and disease management were done as and when necessary. Fruits were harvested on August. Data in respect of number of fruits per plant, weight of fruit, length of fruit, diameter of fruit, mesocarp thickness, TSS (%) of mesocarp and endocarp, seeds per fruit and yield per plant were recorded from each unit plot and analyzed statistically with the help of MSTAT-C programme and the means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Results of this experiment revealed that the treatment combination of 50% fruit thinning and bagging with white polythene of guava may be considered depending on number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, mesocarp thickness and yield per plant as well as quality guava fruit. Maximum fruit weight was obtained from the treatment combinations of T₃B₁which might be due to less number of fruits in the plant and the protection of fruit from ultra violet ray, as a result, the cell division of fruit increased and proper availability of photosynthesis of fruits in the plant.
