Comparative Efficacy of Indigenous Medicinal Plant, Neem (azadirachta Indica) and Imported Drugs Against Humpsore and Other Skin Lesions of Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Humpsore a chronic granulomatous and ulcerative lesions of cattle was treated by Neguvon (Organophosphate compound) with Sulphanilamide or Neem leaves and barks. Neem leaves or barks alone was found suitable in superficial wound therapy for healing in cattle and guinea pigs.

Objectives:

To combat the skin lesions of cattle by using Neem leaves as a substitutes of imported drugs.

Methodology:

A survey was conducted in five villages of Mymensingh Kotwali thana namely Sutiakhali, Babukhali, Dari-Babukhali, Boyra and Barabillarpar. The villages were about 5 kilometers south of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. A total of 500 animals of both sexes over 2 years of age were selected and the diseases were diagnosed on the basis of history, area of the body affected and cilinical symptoms. The period of survey was from July 1991 to December 1991. Indigenous medicinal plant Neem leaves and barks were purchased, washed and sundried for 3 days, then kept in oven at 40°C for 24 hours. Barks and leaves were then powdered by a grinder. Four drug formulations were prepared. i.Neguvon 1 %; Dired Neem bark leaves 10%; Vaselline 89 % ii.Neguvon 1 %; Sulphanillamide powder 10%; Vaselline 89^% iii.Dried Neem leaves and barks 10%; Vaselline 90% iv. Sulphanilamide powder 10%; Vaselline 90%. The different formulations of drug were applied on 100 cattle suffering from humpsore, 30 cattle with superficial wounds and 18 guinea pigs having artificial wounds.

Achievement/Findings:

The incidence of skin lesions of cattle were: humpsore 14-22% (18 average), yokegall 12-19% (16% average) and other skin lesions such as wounds, abcesses, dermatitis, dermatomycosis etc 5-10% (8% average). Results on 100 animals suffering from humpsore and treated with four formulationsrevealed that 100% animals were curred in 30 days with the formulation containing neguvon either with sulphanilamide or with Neem leaves or barks. Sulphanilamide or Neem derivatives lone could not cure humpsore but in both the occassisons ulceration subsided temporarily. Results of formulation 'c' (Neem derivatives) and 'd' (sulphanilamide) applied on superfical wound of cattle showed that in 15 days percentage of healing by 'c' was 60% and by 'd' was 70% and in control 30%. In artificial wounds of guinea pigs formulations 'c' and 'd' healed wounds in 7 days and the recovery was 100% where as in control group healing was 20%.
