The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University farm in the rabi season of 2002-2003 to observe the water use efficiency and to find out an optimum sulphur dose for onion under different soil moisture regimes. Yield of onion increased by 0.47 t ha-1, increasing per mm of water use. Yield of onion is linearly correlated to the number of irrigation and can be increased by 1.55 t ha-1 from per unit increase of irrigation. Water use efficiency increased with increase in water use by the crop is proportionate with onion yield. The highest irrigation (IW: CPE ratio of 1.2) along with 30 kg sulphur per hectare gave the highest total water use efficiency (TWUE) as well as performed an economic and acceptable yield (16.33 t ha-1) of onion in Shallow Red- Brown Terrace soil.

To observe the water use and use efficiency and to find out optimum rate of sulphur fertilizer for onion under different soil moisture regimes.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University farm, Gazipur in the Rabi season of 2002-2003. The experimental soil having bulk density 1.40 g/cc and particle density 2.62 g/cc with a pH of 6.2. The soil contains organic C 0.89 %, total N 0.09%, P 22 g s'. K 0.095 meq/100 g soil, and S level 16.212  g-1 soils, respectively. The experiment was laid in a split-plot design with three replications. Experimental variables consisted of four irrigation treatments arranged as main plots such as I0=No irrigation (control), I1=irrigation at IW/CPE ratio of 0.4,I2= Irrigation at IW/CPE ratio of 0.8 and I3= Irrigation at IW/CPE ratio of 1.2 and four sulphur doses as sub- plots such as So= No application of S (control), Sl = Application of S at the rate of 15 kg ha-1, S2 = Application of S at the rate of 30 kg ha! and S3 = Application of S at the rate of 45 kg ha-1. Forty days old, healthy and uniform onion seedlings of cultivar T aherpuri were transplanted on 24th December, 2002 maintaining row to row and plant to plant spacing of 20 cm and 10 cm, respectively. The seedlings were watered immediately after transplanting. The dimension of each plot was 2.4 m X 2.0 m having a plot to plot and block to block spacing of 1.0 m and l.5 m, respectively. Well decomposed cowdung @10 tha-1 was applied during final land preparation. The crop was fertilized with 120 kg N ha", 90 kg P205 ha-1, 90 kg K20 ha! and 5 kg Zn ha-1. Urea, TSP, MP, and ZnO were used as a source of N, P, K and Zn, respectively. S was applied from gypsum. N was applied in three equal splits. Half of N and full amount of other fertilizers were applied 2 days prior to transplanting and thoroughly mixed with the soil. The remaining half of N was applied in two equal splits at 20 and 40 days after transplanting. Fixed amount of irrigation water (3 cm) to meet the fraction of cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) as per treatment was applied through calibrated hosepipe. Pan evaporation data were recorded everyday and cumulative figures were calculated subtracting the rainfall. When the ratio between irrigation water (IW) and cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) attained the ratio prefixed for a particular treatment, it was considered as the time of its irrigation. The bulbs of each plot were harvested on April 5, 2003 and the yield was taken. Soil moisture upto 30 cm rooting depth was determined for computing soil water depletion from the soil samples collected before and at harvest. Total water use (TWU) of the crop was calculated as the sum of irrigation water applied, seasonal rainfall and profile-water use. Water use efficiency (WUE) was calculated for evaluating the contribution of unit amount of water to crop yield.
