An experiment was carried out on the saline soil of Satkhira in Bangladesh during the T. aman season (July to December) of 2000 in order to test the effectiveness of the cyanobacterial inoculum on reclamation of soil salinity. The modern rice (Oryza sativa L.) variety BRRI dhan31 was used as the test crop. There were six treatments for the experiment viz. T 1 (control), T 2 (Recommended Fertilizer Dose), T3 (RFD-20%N), T4 (RFD-20%N + Cyanobacteria), T5 (RFD- 40%N) and T 6 (RFD-40%N + Cyanobacteria). Eight cyanobacterial strains were isolated, identified and brought under pure unicyanobacterial cultures from Shymnagar, Satkhira in Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with 4 replications of each treatment. Cyanobacterial inoculum was applied at the rate of 20 kg/ha in two equal splits-7 and 30 days after transplanting. Inoculation of the cyanobacterial inoculum in the saline soil resulted in a significant decrease in soil electrical conductivity and exchangeable Na and Mg. Results of the experiments indicate that cyanobacterial inoculum might be used effectively for reclamation of saline soils.

To test the effectiveness of the cyanobacterial inoculum on reclamation of soil salinity

The study was conducted at Shymnagar, Satkhira in Bangladesh during the T. Aman season of 2000.The experimental plot was part of the non-calcareous Grey Floodplain. The soil had a loam textural class with pH 7.9, exchangeable K 0.5 cmol(+) kg-l, exchangeable Na 4.5 cmo~+)kg-l, exchangeable Ca 7.2 cmol(+)kg-1, exchangeable Mg 3.7 cmol(+)kg-1, electrical conductivity 6.4 dS/m, cation exchange capacity 19 me/l00g. Soil texture, pH , exchangeable K, Na, Ca, Mg, electrical conductivity and cation exchange capacity were determined.The experiment consisted of six treatments comprising T1: Control, T2: Recommended Fertilizer Dose (RFD), T3: RFD - 20%N, T4: RFD - 20%N + Cyanobacteria, T5: RFD - 40%N, and T6: RFD-40%N +Cvanobacteria. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications and each plot measured 5 m x 4 m. The fertilizer rates used for RFD were 65 kg N/ha from urea, 8 kg P /ha from triple superphosphate, 30 kg K/ha from muriate of potash and 5 kg S/ha from gypsum. Urea was applied in three equal splits-first during final land preparation and the remaining in two equal splits at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages of rice crop growth. Cyanobacterial inoculum was applied at the rate of 20 kg/ha in two splits- 7 and 30 days after transplanting. The rice variety used was BRRI dhan31. Thirty- five day- old rice seedlings were transplanted on 4 August 2000, maintaining a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm and three seedlings being transplanted per hill. Irrigation, weeding, top dressing of fertilizer and application of insecticides were done as and when required during growth period of crop. The crop was harvested on 17 December, 2000. The yield components and yield were recorded. All the parameters under study were statistically analyzed by F-test to examine the treatment effects and the mean difference were determined by the Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

All the treatments caused a decreasing effect on the pH value of the post harvest soils compared to the initial soil. From the result, it is found that cyanobacteria reduce EC, exchangeable Na and exchangeable Mg and as a result the salinity of soil decreases. Results of the experiments indicate that cyanobacterial inoculum might be used effectively for reclamation of saline soils.
