A solution culture experiment was conducted with six mungbean genotypes with the objective of studying the performance of mungbean under optimal and sub- optimal nitrogen environment. Hoagland solution was used as source for nitrogen. Growth, yield, photosynthesis and nitrogen uptake was measured at 35, 49 and 63 days after emergence. Among the six genotypes, GK3 was found to outyield the other genotypes under both sub-optimal and optimal nitrogen levels. Among the rest five genotypes, IPSA25 was found to yield higher than VC6153B and VC6144A though it did not differ significantly from PDM54 and V01443A-G.

To study the growth, productivity and nitrogen uptake of mung bean genotypes under optimal and sub-optimal nitrogen environment.

Six mungbean genotypes VC6153B, VC 6144A, GK 3, PDM 54, IPSA25 and VO 1443A- G were selected as treatment variables for the experiment. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomised Design. The rows were arranged in north-south direction in a polyvinyl shed. The genotypes were raised under two levels of supplied nitrogen (High N-154 mg/l and Low N-34 mg/l). Hoagland 3 solution: (3.5 mM Ca(N03)2, 5 inM KN03 1 mM KH2P04, 0.99 mM MgS04, 19 M Fe-citrate and micro elements made of 0.154 mM N (high N level-HN)) and Hoagland 1 solution: (0.5 mM Ca(N03)2, 5 mM K2S04, 0.5 mM Ca(H2P04)2, 2 mM CaS04 0.99 mM MgS04, 19 M Fe203, and micro-nutrient made of 0.34 mM N (low N level-LN) were used as source for nitrogen. The seeds of selected mungbean genotypes were sown on 13 April 2001 in vermiculite filled net bag. Three seedlings were transferred in each vessel (size- 20 liter) containing nutrient solutions (Hoagland 3 and Hoagland 1) at 14 days after emergence (DAE) on 30 April 2001. The treatments were replicated thrice. Two plants from each vessel were harvested at 35 DAE and 49 DAE respectively. The remaining one was kept in the container up to maturity (c. 63 days). The pH of the solution was maintained at 6.5 by adding required amount of 4N H2S04. The nutrient solution was changed twice in a week and was aerated continuously using air pump to maintain sufficient oxygen for root respiration and to provide solution mixing. Photosynthesis was measured at vegetative, flowering, pod filling and maturity stage using fully expanded leaf (the third from the top) with a portable Photosynthesis System assembled with an infra Red Gas Analyzer (IRGA) and data logger. After each harvest, plant parts were separated and dried at 700 C for 72 hours till constant weight was attained and dry weight of individual plant parts were recorded. After final harvest, yield and yield components such as pod length, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant were determined. The plant samples segmented and dried earlier were bulked after recording dry weight. Bulked plant samples were ground in laboratory mill and passed through 0.18 mm sieve to determine N uptake by the plants (Micro-Kjeldahl method). Data were analyzed by the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Means were separated using LSD test and used to determine specific differences among genotypes.

Among six genotypes GK3 was found to out yield the other genotypes under both low and high nitrogen level. Among the rest five genotypes, IPSA25 was found to yield higher than VC6153B and VC6144A though it did not differ significantly from PDM54 and V01443A-G. Under high N level high vigor genotypes attained higher growth rate and accumulated more dry mass than low vigor ones (except VC6153 and VC6144A). But GK3 had consistently higher dry mass yield throughout the growth phases. At low nitrogen level, the maximum biomass of the low productive and high productive species did not differ significantly. Further investigation needs to be carried out involving GK3 and IPSA25 under different nitrogen levels.
