Water Use and Water Use Efficiency of Tomato as Influenced by Ught and Moisture Regimes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The influence of three light levels, i.e., 100, 75 and 50% PAR and five irrigation levels based on IW/CPE ratios, i.e., 1.00, 0.75, 0.50, 0.25 and no-irrigation on water use and water use efficiency was evaluated in a field experiment in red-brown terrace soil . Results showed that the mean crop water use ranged from 128 to 318 mm. Both light and irrigation levels and their interaction affected both water use and water use efficiency. As the light and irrigation levels increased, the crop water use also increased. In both the cases, a quardratic response was evident. WUE was also affected by the interaction of light and irrigation levels with the highest value (347 kg rnm^-1ha^-1) associated with 75% PAR at no irrigation. In general, as the light and irrigation levels increased, the WUE decreased.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum PAR and water requirement for tomato and assess the effect of PAR and water availability on the yield and yield attributes of tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University , Gazipur during October 2003 to April 2004 under upland condition. The treatments included three light levels, i.e., 100, 75 and 50% PAR and five levels irrigation at IW/CPE ratio 1.00, 0.75, 0.50, 0.25 and no-irrigation. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with PAR levels in the main plot and irrigation in the sub-plot. The unit plot size was 2 & 3 m and replicated thrice. In 100% PAR, the plots received full sunlight and it was reduced to 75% and 50% light levels using nylon nets by measuring the incident PAR by Linear PAR Ceptometer, Decagon Devices, Inc. 800-755-2751 (USA). Irrigation was applied at 40 mm in each application based on required cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) . Thirty three day old healthy seedlings of the tomato, variety BARI Tomato-8 were transplanted at 60 cm x 40 cm spacing on November 29, 2003 on well prepared beds in unit plots with 180 kg N, 138 kg P₂0₅150 kg K₂0 and 15 ton cow dung per hectare. The experimental plots were weeded frequently to keep the plots weed free in addition to adopting recommended cultural practices. Soil water content down to 45 cm depth was determined at planting and at final harvest gravimetrically. Crop water use (WU) was determined using the water balance equation WU= (S+ IR +RF) in which WU = Water use (mm), IR = Total irrigation water applied (mrn), RF = Seasonal effective rainfall (mm) and S = Soil water depletion (mm), i.e., Initial moisture content - Moisture content at final harvest.
